For protein, I like Muscle Pharm's products. If you research on your own you will see that it gets good reviews:

MusclePharm was actually one of the brands I just happened to be looking at when I went to Vitamin World last week. Didn't commit to buying anything because I had no idea what the hell I was looking at.

Actually, with that said, is it alright to be on both a protein supplement, and then a pre-workout supplement as well?

You need to add more fats and proteins IMO. Healthy fats, little bit of saturated, no trans fats. Add more meat (larger servings maybe) or supplement with protein powders. Mass gainers are probably your friend. I use regular whey since I bloat and get fat if I use a mass gainer (it's different for everyone).

Post workout meal is the most important of the day usually.
I might have two beers every other day. Weekends are depending on how my relationship is going, LOL.

Dinner is the most fulfilling meal of the day. I usually take a lot of time preparing a well rounded dinner. I could increase the meat servings as a start, since I don't think I'll gain much weight adding more asparagus.

Question for everyone: as a European, I've always eaten dinner quite late. Growing up, we usually had dinner around 8pm. Sometimes it was later than that. As an adult, I eat between 9 and 10pm. I have a friend who bangs on about it being bad for me. I am not gaining weight, nor do I sleep poorly because of it.

Thoughts? The only thing I've found is that you're supposed to NOT eat three hours before going to sleep. I usually go to bed between 12:30am and 1am.

I USED to do this same distance in about 21, so I have some work to do. My short term goal on this 2.3 is to do it without walking. Came home and dinner was almost ready. Screw the people, I didn't smell all that bad, and they are a family of runners so they would understand.

Today my son has baseball practice next to the track. I'm going to do some intervals and time the 50 and 200.

I use the walktracker to get my times/distances. I saw that when I crossed 12:00 I was at 1.30 miles, so the first item on the test is OK.
Looking forward to your update today!

I think the problem with eating before sleep, is the fact that your body goes into remission, so you can't actively do anything to help burn some of the calories you just took in.

I tried to simulate a real test last night.
I got there with my 100' tape and measured off the 55 yards.
Ran the 12 minutes, got to about 5.75 laps running the middle of the track. I thought that was pretty easy. Walked the last .25 lap and over to the drinking fountain. Stretched a bit then headed to the 55yd starting line. First try: 8.1 That can't be right, let me try this again. 8.1 I'm still not sure with my watch because it flashed between 8.1 and 8:77, but it's still less than 9.
Walked to the apex of the track, set off, and pulled across the opposite apex at 33.2 Now I know something is wrong here, I can't sprint 8.1 and then do 4x that in the same time. Talked to my son and he says when he was there they made them run 5 laps for a mile.
Starting blood sugar was 220. Completed the running at 202, then did some d-hoe edging of the field. Dropped to 135 and ate the caldo de camarones con arroz the wife sent me to practice with. At bedtime I was feeling totally slogged, checked and I was only at 39, YIKES! HAd a Sprite and a bunch of handfuls of HNCheerios before passing out. Woke up this morning and still only up to 55.

The next 24-36 hours I will have to keep a close watch. Today's plan is about 30-45 minutes of yoga for the legs when I get home. No running. Maybe some sushi for dinner.

You need to focus on a decent breakfast too. You're missing your daily jump start. Try scrambling a bunch of eggs to get you through a few days (...or hard boil a dozen), and eat that with whole wheat toast, yogurt and a protein shake.

That's an antiquated suggestion. It depends on your goals. I ALWAYS eat a meal right before bed to feed my body while I sleep. All muscle growth happens while asleep. It's about what you eat rather than the act of eating itself.

Good advice. I eat breakfast on the weekends, but maybe I'll give myself an extra half hour in the morning to get something in my system before I run off.

I'm very, very interested in your progress, especially given the medical condition that you deal with. It'll be good reference material for those dealing with various aspects of being a diabetic and trying to incorporate fitness into their lifestyle.

If you're lazy, preparation will be your best friend. Keep pouches or cans of tuna around for easy consumption.

In the morning, I am a zombie. I wake up, I take a duke, I gear up for my ride, and I'm gone.

Cool. We don't eat unhealthy in this household. Dinner at 10pm last night was chicken breast, mushrooms, carrots and couscous.

SC is right. You'll want to have something quick and ready for you in the a.m.
Make it the night before so you can just grab it with the rest of your gear and then go

Yeah, I think starting next week I am going to try and prepare myself a "morning" bag with some nuts, yogurt, and hard boiled eggs that I can toss in my backpack with my lunch.

I know it hasn't been doing me any good by not having anything at all, so I'm curious to see how I feel after a week of changing the morning routine.

Every morning I eat a bowl of muesli/granola mixed with plain greek yoghurt drizzled with honey and raw cacao chunks. It's the best.

Granola is an awesome idea, I can't believe I forgot about that.

Honestly, Nature Valley had an Oats and Honey cereal that was OFF THE FREAKING CHAINS. I think it has been discontinued for a long time now, but it has some of the best granola chunks I've ever had in my life. I miss it so much.

P1,
Do you have refrigerator/microwave at work? When I used to ride to work, I'd pick one day a week to drive the pack-truck. Pack in a good week's supply of things to eat once I get to work. Yogurt, Jimmy Dean breakfast sammiches, eggs (from the back yard) 1/2 gal milk, cheese. That way when you get in, after riding and waking up, there's some options for you.

Those NV granola bars that they show on TV are still my favorite.
