Hey guys,

Just wanted to give you an update that I lightened up the tint to 35% and it seems to be interferring less with the auto-dimming sensor. It still dims a little, but not as much as when I was running 15% all-around.

So now it's 35% for the front 2 windows and 15% for all rear.

There is coding for the headunit that can restore brightness.

I have not seen any code for DIM.

15% tint! Are you an Uber driver for vampires or something?

Haha good one.

Yea, came out a little darker than I would have liked.

Had my windows tinted yesterday at 35% and noticed the aggressive auto-dimming effect this morning. Shining my phone flashlight on the area to the left of the driver display brightened up both displays.

I went 70% on the windshield, 18% front, and 5% rear, and have no auto-dimming issues. This is my second M340i (first one was lemon lawed, long story), but the first one did not have any issues with 18% front/5% rear either—obviously it had other, persistent issues!

This is happening to me as well. The display is definitely dimming on me. I have ceramic tints installed by the dealer. 35%

Glad to hear it's working out for you.

I'm really curious about why your previous M340 was lemon law'ed.

Would you mind sharing or do you have a separate write-up somewhere?

It was such a drawn out nightmare, I haven’t found the inclination to relive it just yet. Essentially, I couldn’t make calls while the car was moving due to disturbance on the Bluetooth mics—it sounded like there was air hitting the mic so everyone would ask me to put my windows up even though they already were.

The car was in service for 45 days over the course of the first 55 days of me owning it, and BMWUSA’s own area engineer couldn’t find a fix. They replaced the mics first, but that did nothing; and then they replaced the audio module but then could no longer calibrate the mics. BMW finally agreed to do a VIN swap, and since they couldn’t find another M340i at my MSRP, they wrote me a check for the difference.

I’m still peeved since I made two payments on the first car, but was driving very poorly equipped loaners, and I spent $600 getting the first car tinted for no reason. BMW has declined any compensation aside from the difference in the MSRP.

Speaking of sensors, are there any sensors to the right of the driver display, left of the central display? I know that cars with gesture control have their sensore on both sides of the central display, but I'm not sure if there are any sensors other that those.

Wow, sorry to hear about the issues you had...

I know a handful of people in here (including myself) have had incidents relating to speakers and/or mics., https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1615200

I'd definitely fight for compensation on those tinted windows. That's not right.

Thanks for sharing the story.

I tried increasing the brightness with the little dial next to the head light switch and that did nothing. I also tried increasing the brightness through the display settings and that also did nothing. Also couldn't find any auto-dim feature in the settings that I could disable.

Per the enclosed image, I think the auto-dim sensor is in this black portion next to the speedometer because when I put my hand over it, it dims everything and when I take my hand off, everything brightens up again.

Do you know if there's any way to turn off this auto-dim feature for the displays whether it be through a setting or coding? I imagine other owners who are tinting their windows are having the same issue?

Thanks in advance, guys!
This is why I decided to skip tinting on my G30. Many stories about auto dimming problems post tint installs and this is due to the digital dash displays and full reliance on light sensors to control the brightness.

Thanks! It was a drawn out dilemma, and BMW was pretty sheisty throughout. Silver lining is that I was on the fence about Dravit Grey and regretted it every time I saw the bronze metallic elements in direct sunlight. I am much happier with SBM/Cognac

I have both G01 X3 and a G20 330i.. They each have 30% tint on them (X3 from the dealer was already installed, the 330 I had done.) Both have issues with the dimming during the daytime. I drive the 330 mostly, and I've noticed that it is usually happening when the sun is coming in from the passenger side angle.

It is frustrating that there is no way to override the minimum on the photo sensor.

Tint issues

I had 35% tints for about 2 weeks now. It was fine the first week, but it was cloudy yesterday and I noticed the dimming. It would change if I opened the window. I don't see it being much an issue in the summer due to sunny days. But I imagine this getting annoying in the Fall or Winter.

I would like to know if you guys are leaving your headlight switches on off or AUTO? Wonder if that would make a difference.

I never use the auto function and would like to know before tinting the car. This could get really annoying in overcast & rainy Seattle Fall / Winter / Spring weather
