The g20 I got is the base model with the smaller screen and it actually only comes with iDrive 6, I think it's called Live Cockpit Plus, and unfortunately it is the only one sold in my country so far. However I've found that the 10.25" screen and head unit are actually being sold on ebay so my question is

would it be possible to retrofit the iDrive 7 head unit?

and what type and how much coding would be required? if possible, I am thinking of doing that..

Yes, but it's a 8" screen with analog dials and iDrive 6, not 7.

The iDrive 7 one I think it's called Live Cockpit Pro, that's the 10.25" and digital dials

I know the live cockpit pro cats have the smaller screen. But I believe it's the same idrive version? I could be wrong.

And a retrofit might be possible if you want a bigger screen.

No cars built 2018-2019 came with ID6 on base models or those not specced with the right options.

I think it was only from early 2020 they all came with ID7 as standard.

OP - it was certainly possible to change screens in the previous F series cars. You could also find the new software. I'm not sure about the G20 because the tech is a lot more advanced and it's built more into the dash but it's worth some more research.

You will of course lose all warranty for the idrive system - may need to be taken into account.

That is new info to me. Thank you!

And yes. A screen upgrade might be possible but not sure about changing ID6 to ID7. That will probably be much more complicated and expensive and require new modules and extensive coding as well.

No worries. I presume they wanted to get rid of excess stock of the ID6 units?!

I'm not sure either on ID7. It's light years ahead of ID6.

On ID5 you could code a version of ID6 - I think it was named ID6 lite but didn't give the full ID6 options.

OP - It might be worth asking on the coding sections if anyone knows if there is a ID7 lite?

Exactly, that's what I was thinking, kind of like the nbt evo upgrade of the f30s. My car was probably the first g20 sold on my country, production according to my VIN number is 03/19 but it was sold to my on october and as 2020 model. I know I will void my warranty but I am sure they won't do it for me..

I posted it here because I really think that there is to be some more research done.

Yes, indeed. The head unit is also sold, I guess with iDrive 7, I'd have to ask the seller though

I really want android auto though, and perhaps some more stuff that comes with iDrive 7..

I know iDrive 6 is great also, I really enjoy using that knob, I just can't imagine how people use cars with only touch screens, it's so annoying not having a knob..

Personally, I wouldn’t do it. I have the Live cockpit professional or whatever it’s called and it’s not worth it. It isn’t customizable. I would not spend a penny retrofitting it if I had live cockpit plus. I like the analog look and I’m guessing the widgets are all the same? Does it (live cockpit plus) display nav in the cluster too?

My ex-A4 and present SQ5 both have the older virtual cockpit and even that was miles ahead of what BMW provides. The new Virtual cockpit 2.0 is even more customizable.

BMW doesn't support maps for my country so I really don't know, I have navigation but for neighbouring countries and haven't actually tested myself yet, but I don't think it would. I know that it would tell you speed limits because I've seen some pictures of it but not in my car.

That's why I really want android auto. I despise apple enough to not own a single product from them, not even to use it just for carplay.

To be honest, I'd love to do the opposite..... I like the i7 functionality on my 3201 M sport, but i really dislike the instrument cluster. I would like easy to see round dials that both go clockwise and no digital read out....
Is it possible to retrofit the ID6 cluster only???

It should be possible since the base G20 here comes with ID7 but the digital analog cluster.

8.8 screen? Looks like the 10" to me. ID6 doesn't have the widgets and the picture looks like it has the new widgets rather than the old style 3 blocks.

It says 8.8” in the description but they could be wrong.

And it has the ID7. Not ID6. But the cluster is the digital analog (live cockpit plus) cluster. Not fully digital (live cockpit professional).

I don't think it looks like iD7 at all, it looks more like iD6

I believe all 2020 G20s are ID7. Not 100pc sure though.
