Requesting Android Auto iDrive Update
Has anyone successfully just requested for the dealership to install the latest iDrive update (Android Auto)?
It's quite annoying to be waiting around with no real time frame of when the OTA update will come. I've read some people get it installed when they go in for service at the dealership. Has anyone actually just called and asked if they can bring their car in for the update? I really want to upgrade to an android device but I don't want to do that until android auto is supported in the G20. |

that's the point of OTA. No point in arguing with a dealer about the OTA updates as they have no control over it or know much about it. Your best bet is to call up saying your iDrive has been playing up - it's slow, restarts sometimes etc. They will update the software. The one you want is 07.2020 They did mine because I had an issue with my sunroof not closing.

Sucks they didn't upgrade you to the latest software. But, not too big of a deal since you were going on for another issue anyways. I'm so impatient; I could wait for the next service interval but that might be quite a bit of time.

I have heard that but don't know for sure. I will be going to dealer for routine service tomorrow. I will be telling them I drive 7 is buggy and such. Hope I will get 7/2020. I will see if android auto is there as I have a S9

My G21 is in for warranty replacement of rear light cluster. Asked them to update the idrive software so i could have android auto. They didn't have a clue what i was talking about. I told them the software version numbers, still none the wiser. Sent them links to this forum showing picture of people with 07.2020. Still weren't getting it. It's embarrassing the enthusiast community know more about these things than the BMW franchise dealer network. I'm in UK, Edinburgh.

I'm honestly super surprised at how unknown this update is to all of the dealerships (all over the world apparently).
This update to include Android Auto is a huge deal for BMW. For years car reviewers, forums, etc. have been complaining about the lack of Android Auto support in BMW's. It's bizarre to me that BMW has not educated anyone at the dealerships of this update. I bet if you were to ask around the sales department hopefully some of them would know about the Android Auto support. It seems since the service department is not very customer facing they don't get informed. I sure hope the sales department at least knows about the 07.2020 update. IMO it's a major selling point for customers. |

It's because they can't claim warranty work just for doing updates. And it is a pain for them because it can take ages. Now with OTA they really don't want to do it. If you go in with issues not related to software they may not do an update to latest version and instead use the latest most common OTA update released which is 03.2020 which is quick. But if you have a software issue they should plug into the main system and update to 07.2020.

I'm still on 11.2019. Seems the couldn't be bothered. Plus they ruined my drivers carpet mat with someone's oily footprints. Tore a strip off them and now promised at least a set new mats and a big grovelling apology. The latest in a long line of f**k ups by this service department. Avoid at all costs Peter Vardy BMW Edinburgh. I can no longer trust them not to damage my car when it's in their possession.

So update, picked up the car and no android auto. The dealer says latest software is 3/2020.39. I said that was not the case but SA that is what we have. Did not want to argue. She also said lots of people coming in with issues after an OTA updates. It supposedly causing bugs to the system. Some cars even on tow trucks as they don't start. So rather than pester them more I guess I will wait till next time. On the up side car seems faster but exhaust a bit quieter. Maybe it's just me

And it sounds like a load of BS re cars having issues after the OTA updates. We would hear a lot about that on the forums. Also 07.2020 hasn't started OTA yet. I have 07.2020 updated by dealer and it's more stable than any other update I've had. Sounds like the usual 'it's a characteristic of the car sir' from the SA. Re the quieter note - take her out for an Italian tune and she'll be back to normal.

iDrive updates don't do any of that. It's just you.
