Looking for tire recommendations for the winter?
Hey guys,
So the weather is getting colder and I live on the east coast, still have the stock tires that came on my g20 msport. Don't think it will help me out when the weather gets really cold, heavy cold rain and snow. Any recommendations on what tires work great with the G20 in the winter? I have staggered setup Thanks |

currently have dunlop 3d 235 square and they are excellent on dry cold roads, freezing rain and slush with good steering response. lm32 has slightly softer sidewall for a more comfy ride but worse steering response. Check bmw specs for your model and recommended winter tires also. |

Hi there!
If you want to go safety go with the Nokkian Hakkapellita R3 I got those tires last year and they are amazing! They're made in Finland and they're focus only on winter tires which are the best on the market but difficult to find them! |

I just put Pirelli Sotozerro 3 on 18" wheels (bought stock 18" wheels to use as takeoffs) earlier this week. No snow yet, but they are more comfortable than my stock 19s, and seem to have very good on road manners.

Micheline Pilot Alpine PA4. Best performance winter tire I have ever used, and they are still very decent in the snow & ice.

Once it gets below 40 degrees, summer tires are useless - thought that was all message board hype but its true.
I got winter wheels w blizzaks and they're amazing. Best $1400 I ever spent on a car. Treads are still great after 6 winters! AWD 3-series w winter tires are unbeatable in the snow. |

Same. 18" setup, I think 225/40/18s and the car was awesome, and quiet.

I would agree with otherS that a dedicate set of winter tires/wheels is optimal, especially if you endure significant snow. If it’s only sub 50 temps and the occasional dusting of snow, and you are not flogging the car during the warm months, you could swap out to an ultra-high-perfprmance all season tire like the Michelin A/S +3, or the Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate. I’m leaning toward the latter.

Can I echo the Blizzak recommendations? I have been using them for years on all sorts of vehicles. RWD e39 BMW 528i, FWD 8th gen Honda Accord, AWD Acura MDX, AWD MB ML350, RWD F30 BMW 320i, AWD MB GLE350, RWD F30 BMW 340i, and AWD MB GLS450. On the suv's they were the DM-V1 and DM-V2, and on the cars I've used the WS60, 70, & 80. Only tire I liked better was the Nokian but after that one time, they were hard to find again.

Had Pirelli Sottozero 3 on my F30, 255/45R17 square set up.
Car was literally driving like on rails in light snow. The back was literally snapping back in control when pushed too hard in the corners. Unfortunately bolt pattern is different on G20 so I have to sell. |

If you have the M Sport braking system (blue calipers) does anyone know whether that restricts the wheel sizes possible? I think the calipers are slightly bulkier than stock, not sure if the discs are too?

Do you have the regular blue M calipers or do you have the upgraded track package that includes even larger calipers and rotors and includes an oil cooler up front.

Those are just the standard M brakes not the larger ones. You shouldn't have a problem finding lots of options in 18 inch rims that will clear these calipers. If you are looking an even smaller wheel size like 17" you MAY be able to find something that fits, but I'm not positive.

Sad news, couldn't find Blizzak LM's to fit 18" winter rims on the M340i, so this is my first winter tire brand change in 10 years! I went with the Pirelli Sottozero3s. I'll report back in a month when they are on the car.
