So is there an estimated time that dealers will see inventory?

Wouldn't that be something. BMW, please don't put that monstrosity of a grille on g80. Please.

Adjust for the fact that it takes about a month from SOP to start of sales in European dealerships, and this matches perfectly with my attempts of more precise predictions.

So m3 will not have m4 face as in F8x and e90 generations?

I will wait for the LCI Comp version when they fix the ugly grill. My F80 is still awesome and be fun for another couple of years.

They need to put M3 on M4 production cycle to avoid these gaps in availability.

Yes! The 4/M3/M4 will share the same front grilles.

So for the UK, if production begins Jan 2020, we could see deliveries for customers March 2020 with the new 20 plate!

That does, however, mean the official unveil has to be very soon. November?

I think going to a 911S (bespoke sports car vs upgraded 3 series) is more than acceptable - unless you are after AWD, 8 speed auto and a big grille !

super excited about this! Most anticipated release since the mid engine Vette. haha.

So does this help pinpoint when we will actually see the car or will it just be when they roll into dealers that we get to take a peek? Thanks!

That would be great both for improved corporate efficiency and more clear, consistent understanding of product availability for customers. But it may be a lofty goal at this point given the gap between a new generation standard Series vehicle and its M counterpart is currently all over the place, and pulling the M3 ahead isn't going to move the needle much on that. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the X5 M, X6 M, and M8 GC are also coming soon and if we look at those with the M3 and M4, and throw in the recently added X3 M and X4 M, there is really no obvious pattern among the release timeframes.

If we think of the M as just another trim level, which is not completely accurate, but from a manufacturing perspective it does largely behave that way, it is perhaps a little arbitrary to work toward a specific launch window relative to the base model's SOP. I say this because BMW is constantly adding new trim levels, engine options, drivetrain configurations across the lineup, and there is no consistency (or expectation of consistency, really) for when those happen. I think the best they can do is to release products when they are ready. As you know, that depends not just on the vehicle development timeline, but the manufacturing, marketing, market conditions, and other factors.

Quote:
It's apparent from the styling that BMW is trying to differentiate between the base 3 and 4 series more than before, so it's reasonable to assume they would do the same for the M.
It sure would make sense. The most obvious way to do that, though, would be to give the M3 the 3 Series grill/headlights while the M4 continues to share the 4 Series grill/headlights (just like they do for the 5 => M5, 8 => M8) and pictures of test mules would appear to rule out that possibility. To instead come up with a third set of parts just for the M3 so that it can be distinct from both the 3er and 4er/M4 seems so completely random that it is difficult to believe any rational business case exists for it.

This made sense with the E9x series (no 4 series yet), was odd with the F8X series since there was an independent 4 series (although appreciate since the 4er headlights were better) and now is just bizarre (IMO) for the G8x series as the front ends of the 3er and 4er are VASTLY different. I would hope they separate these front ends once and for all for the Hxx series.

OK mkoesel, the horse is officially UNBEATEN! You were chastising me for not understanding the production process and we find out I WAS RIGHT! I will be ordering my new M3 THIS coming winter / spring and not winter / spring of 2021 as you explained here:

The move to split the M3’s and M4’s launch make perfect sense. With the M3 sedan having to depend on the 2 door version to end production and then depend on the regular 3 series to be in production it end up with one of if not the shortest life cycle of any BMW and to mkoesel’s point on ROI on a model plus the fact of being off the market for an extended period is bad for business.

As for the risk to reveal the 4 series front that ship has sailed intentionally by revealing the design well ahead at Frankfurt.

No actually, I wasn't chastising you at all. I was trying to explain the situation, including the details from the past generations. You had historic facts wrong, and I was trying to set you straight.

Sure, you were right about the dates. But history was not on your side. You made a guess, and it happened to be correct.

But you know what? If you were to read through that thread from the very start, you can see that in the beginning, I allowed for the M3 production to move forward this generation, and I even provided a rationale for why I thought it could happen. However, as time went on and spy shots showed the M3 would share with the M4, I hedged toward a simultaneous release. I stand by my reasoning - it was the most probable outcome based on the information available at that time.
