We picked up our new m340i yesterday. We love it so far, but are working through the differences from our old 2012 F30.

It has the power trunk lid feature. Multiple times when we've been rummaging around in the trunk, it started beeping and then closed the lid. It's very disconcerting when you have are leaning into the trunk and it decides to close for no apparent reason. This evening it closed while I was between the trunk and the garage door--there was no way I could move out of the way in time and had to just catch the trunk to stop it.

Has anyone else had this happen? Is it on a timer? Maybe it thinks we are trying to use the kick to open/close feature because we are moving around behind the trunk?

I expected this car to be more aggresive than the 328, but I didn't expect it to bite :-)

Wowzer. That isn’t very clever if there’s a kick to close feature too. For the exact same reason you mentioned.

There is definitely kick to close.

On our old 328, the kick-to-open feature was tricky enough you were highly unlikely to do it by accident. I wonder if they made it more sensitive because people had trouble operating it. (And I wonder if that is adjustable.)

Yeah the X5 has kick to close as well. Most 3 series owners probably don't know since most don't get the power tailgate option. It's personally never affected me, though.

There is a way to code out the kick to close on other BMW models. You might be able to code it out.

To be clear, I like kick-to-close, and hope I can keep it. But if it's so sensitive that you set it off when reaching into the trunk for groceries, something's broken.

Also, I'm only speculating that is the cause. Has anyone else suffered from aggressive trunk lid syndrome? I wonder if there's some body-part sensor that is not working right.

Happens all the time to me, and is really annoying. It's because of the kick to close function. If you get one of your feet even slightly under the bumper as you are placing something in the trunk or taking it out, it will trigger the trunk closing. Way too sensitive. It's almost impossible not to have your feet under the bumper while loading heavy objects into the trunk, otherwise you risk putting your back out. This is the worst piece of design on the car. Pretty much love everything else about it.

That's odd. My X5 has click-to-close but it isn't nearly as sensitive. In fact often times I have to kick multiple times to get it to register before it opens/closes.

Mine also does this, to the point I have to keep my key inside when I wash the car as getting anywhere near the rear bumper will cause the trunk to open and/or close multiple times.

Never been an issue for me and I have size eleven feet??

Maybe some are more sensitive than others?

I would love to know if there is any way that the stupid 'chirp chirp' that happened when closing the boot via Comfort Access can be switched off!! Easy to switch off the equally stupid chirpchirp when locking and unlocking the car but can't see a way of doing the same for,the boot.

No boot bother for me either. I would suggest that the OP's has a slight fault.

No issues reported here. If anything I get nervous if the boot won't close after a kick, in case I look a wally at the supermarket kicking his car to close the boot when the obvious thing to do is push a button.

But...

Rumour has it you can code out the whole comfort access boot thing and it is a 'common' thing to do if you add a tow bar or the BMW rear diffuser. Apparently local BMW centres have to do this if retro fitting these parts.

Or maybe Bimmertech can do it (?)

My quick research on this ended at this part being the place to look: FEM_BODY --> CAM_SMART_OPENER = nicht_aktiv

Or... I'd be tempted to find out where the sensor is under the car and see if you can 'cover it up' somehow (temporarily) to see if this solves the issue. If it does, then at least you know the cause and can take it further from there.

I also have the M-performance CF diffuser and trim. Could that make a difference?

I've have the MPF Carbon diffuser and I'll say the 'comfort kick' is maybe slightly more sensitive IMO since fitting, but not to the point that it causes any issue for me!
I've had the boot pop during washing the back, but my old 435d used to to the same from time to time so...

Sure, and it would be interesting to see if they have the CF diffuser, too. So far all 3 people with the problem have it, and another who has the diffuser says that it is more sensitive than without, but not so much to be a problem.

That looks like a pattern, although a sample size is probably too small to say.

It's pretty telling, I would imagine a very small percentage of owners have the CF diffusor, so the chances the three people with the issue all have it...
