Major Turbo Failure - Warranty Denied?
So I noticed a coolant line was leaking then later when doing a pull in low gear I lost boost and smoke was coming out of the tailpipe. Drove slowly to BMW to have it diagnosed. They ended up changing the water pump (2nd time) and the PCV valve cover. They took it on a test drive afterwards and noticed it still wasn't building boost.
I've messed around with bimmercode and additionally added a M track module to it so the car thinks its a G80 or at least the infotainment system does. I believe I also messed with an option on bimmercode called xtraboost. The dealer denied covering the turbo failure under warranty because they saw the module for the M track cluster plugged into the wiring harness and suspect it's tuned. I told them to pull the engine data and send a report to BMW NA. After some seconds thoughts I'm a little nervous that the xtraboost option in bimmercode may have caused all of this cause what are the chances a stock motor would blow a turbo? I don't have a downpipe, tune, or even intakes for this exact reason. Could someone do me a favor and check if their 2022 M340i mild-hybrid has this xtraboost option on or off stock? It will help me sleep at night at least knowing if this is on by default for the mild hybrid or if its just for the 330e models. As a side note, I ordered the car, couldn't hold back and was driving it pretty hard from 50 miles on the odometer. It now has about 43k miles in a span of 2yrs. I'm not sure how much that could play into it but honestly I'm hoping its that for the sake of the warranty covering it. Any input would be greatly appreciated! |

I spoke with the rep again, and keep in mind he is just a middle man, but basically he relayed to me that the turbo is building absolutely zero boost and there are no messages on the infotainment so that is another reason as to why they suspect the car is tuned when it is not. I'm not sure whether or not this is true but maybe it could be that the M track module I added is preventing the fault to be relayed to the system correctly. Either that or a boost leak somewhere but I'm pretty sure a boost leak would cause a fault light to show up. Again any input would be add a few hours back to my sleep! hahah thanks again.

Dealerships aren't going to risk not getting paid for warranty work. Sounds like the service center doesn't want to spend a lot of time trying to diagnose the problem. Bring your car back to stock and then have it diagnosed again.
Did you buy this car new? If not was it sold to you as CPO?

Bought it brand new, actually ordered it from the factory. No one has driven it beyond me and whoever transports it onto and off the boats. They already turned it away. I spoke with customer relations trying to see if there is any appeal process of any kind. After speaking with a "case manager" there's no overturns in any case beyond if something goes wrong slightly after warranty ends, thats the only case in which anything will change. Going to try to send some emails to some BMW NA executives but the case manager said all they will do is give you a case manager, the same person again, and they will say the same thing.
I'm thinking of either getting a used turbo and having a shop install it for about $1500 for a turbo with 17k miles or get a rebuilt turbo all in for about 4.4K. I'm kinda of scared of getting the used turbo as what if the wear was similar to mine and cause premature failure? Although the price difference is dramatic. I mean you could get this used turbo, it fail again, and get another all including labor. What do you guys think? I know, I know. 4k is big turbo money. But along with that I would need upgraded cooling, tuning licenses, tunes, upgraded chargepipe, intake, etc. etc. On top of that I wouldn't have good reliability and the best peace of mind and I'd have to deal with a straight piped car to get the full benefit, which I don't want on a car driven 20k miles a year. |

I say fight like hell with the dealer and BMW NA on why they are justifying turbo failure based on an infotainment modification. They cannot use that reason.

So at the end I contacted the executives in the operations division of BMW NA and they told me it was reviewed at the highest level and the warranty says any modification to the exhaust will void warranty. Yes, sure, by law they have to prove the muffler delete caused the turbo failure. However, being a massive corporation they can simply denies these claims as whose going to pay the lawyer fees at an attempt to go against some of the best corporate lawyers? At the end I got a used turbo with 17k miles on it and had it installed for about $1700 all in. I also ended up changing oil from the recommended 0W-20 to 5W-30. All in all this is an expense I shouldn't have had to have incurred on me but at the end of the day its big corp vs little fish. What can you do? This will be my last BMW and I will never again recommend any friends/family to get another BMW ever again. I think their designs both interior and exterior (2023-) are going to shit anyways lol.

The real issue in America is nobody cares. As soon as they have a reason to “get off the x” that’s exactly what they do. Nobody seems concerned about trying to find the honest answer anymore because it’s considered too expensive.
I blame dishonesty. It’s become a cancer Last edited by I800C0LLECT; 10-17-2024 at 12:32 AM.. |

There are not widespread turbo issues where you can say that this is clearly a defect. |

The point with warranties is that they have to prove or show how your modification caused the failure. BMW NA saying that "any modification to the exhaust voids the warranty" is ridiculous. I have an AWE touring exhaust on my car, and I'd be quite upset if they tried to deny a turbo warranty (prior to tuning) because of an exhaust modification.
