B58TU heavy oil consumption!!!! HELP PLEASE!!

My M440i burned 2 quarts of 0-20 within 3k miles on the oil, I did beat on it 90% of the time tho.

What’s concerning is I switched over to 5W-30 and it burned a quarter/almosthalf of a quart within 500 miles on that 5w-30 oil..

I also have a Oil smell in the cabin, no smoke out the exhaust, and no smoke out the oil cap when I take it off. I’m lost.

Don’t be alarmed. Two quarts in 3k is not unusual for the B58. Many people on the forum have experienced this, including me. I have to add two quarts between every oil change which I do at 5k miles.

As to the half court. That may just be the oil level reader giving inconsistent results from day of oil change to when you performed the next test. Maybe some settling. It’s not exact every time. But close enough.

I can’t comment as to the smell. But if there is an oil leak somewhere there should be some signs. Oil spot on ground or somewhere else in engine bay.

I checked for leaks, there’s none whatsoever. Just a smell of burning oil that’s fairly strong and hard to miss. And I burnt thru 5w-30 which is honestly insane imo. 0w-20 is understandable but 5w-30?

If the smell concerns you take it to a local shop, not the dealer, and ask them to give a thorough inspection for leaks.

I own a shop lol, I know these have oil consumption but the smell was throwing me off so I checked for leaks with the car on the lift. There was nothing. Not a drop. Besides the diff leaking which is pretty common and was just a few drops.

My 2020 M340i has been from the East Coast to Utah. A couple times in 100 degree Kansas temps. It's been through Deals Gap, and Colorado mountains several times. Some spirited driving, but no abuse.
The oil has never fallen below full.

The B58 engine in the Supra has the same issue of burning oil. I am not sure if Toyota ever issue a fix for that.

Also have a 2020 M340iX. Damn near zero oil consumption. Maybe a 1/4 liter between oil changes which run about 5-6k miles. Currently have 55k miles on the clock. Tuned since month 2 of ownership. Had it nearly three years now. And I’m not always “nice” with how I drive it. Nowhere near, as a matter of fact.

As for the consumption of 5-30, I’d highly recommend staying away from increasing oil weight to combat consumption as it can increase friction and thus, wear. A friction modifier/additive package is more appropriate for your issue.

oil burning on the b58 end of story/

it was a trade off that BMW had to make when they increased the compression ratio of the b58 to 11.0:1; it is near s54 levels of compression which did the same amount of oil burning. has to do with the design of the piston rings which would allow a certain level of seepage more so than a lower compression motor.

Is it tuned?

Do you have the MPE with stock burbles or an after-market aggressive burble tune?

AFAIK there will be oil wash off with these tunes, regadless of the typical debates around 0w-20, 30, 5W-xx etc oil (although happy to be corrected).

So what do I base this on - I have the MPE with stock burbles and ran the car stock for a 12 months from new, and have never dropped below full oil, tuned the car to stage 1 - noticeable oil level drop offs as expected started but nothing significant, certainly not enough to be a concern between changes, then I started changing the parameters of the burble tune and that's when things changed..

12 months stock - full oil all the time, stage 1 no burble tune, miniscule oil burn - moderate burble tune took less than 72 hrs consuming 4 tanks of petrol and out of oil from just below max.

might be a dumb question(s) but....

Why is it not uncommon for this engine to burn oil

and

why do you change every 5K and not bmw's rec service schedule. I thought the synthetic oils where suppose to be better?

It’s not uncommon because a lot of B58 owners experience some above average oil consumption. Others don’t have an issue. I’d just keep and eye on it.

As for the oil change at 5k. I’ve been doing this for some time and for reasons for which I cannot articulate other than it’s good practice.

I don't know about everyone else, but I have never added oil. I change oil every 6k miles and it always shows "Max" when doing a reading.

Factory spec/fitted oil for my b58 in Australia (due to bad fuel quality) is 5w30 LL01. This is what BMW recommends and puts in this engine here. Also have hotter weather year round.

I drive it quite hard and even occasional (light) track. Never, ever needed to add oil.

I am also tuned - MHD Stage 2 with a downpipe.

2 quarts in 3 k miles, wow is all I can say.

Probably the use of 20 grade oils combined with the compression ratio.

The problem isn't the oil, it's the owner of the vehicle.

Another data point for a 2020 non-tuned M340i. I've put ~3k miles since my last oil change, which includes 3 track days. In that time I've consumed about 1/2 liter per my oil measurement program. In between track days, the level doesn't change perceptibly, but I also don't beat on it on the street.

The m340 is 10:2 unlike the 340.

Burning 2 quarts of 0W-20 within 3,000 miles, even with hard driving, is quite a bit. Switching to 5W-30 and burning almost half a quart within 500 miles is definitely concerning.

The oil smell in the cabin, without any visible smoke from the exhaust or the oil cap, could indicate a few possible issues. It might be due to worn valve guides or seals allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber. A malfunctioning PCV system can also cause oil to be drawn into the intake manifold, leading to oil consumption and a noticeable smell. Lastly, worn or damaged cylinder rings could allow oil to bypass into the combustion chamber, causing both oil consumption and the odor.

Given these possibilities, I recommend having your car inspected by a mechanic or taking it to a BMW dealership. Hopefully, they can perform a thorough diagnostic and identify the exact cause of the oil consumption and smell you're experiencing. Also, I would stop using 5W-30. There's a reason why it's highly recommended to use 0W-20, as advised by the engineers behind the B58 engine.

Hope this helps, and good luck getting it sorted out!
