By late 1963, the leaf spring Shelby 289 Cobra was losing its ascendancy at the racetrack. Shelby first tried a Mark II model with a 390 V-8 without much success, but then developed a Mark III Cobra featuring a 427 cubic inch V-8 and coil spring suspension. About 300 427 Cobras were built from 1965.

One of the first UK auto companies to adapt an American V-8 engine was Allard, which some believe inspired Carrol Shelby to later conceive of the Cora.
Here's a 1951 Allard K2 with a 255 cubic-inch flathead Mercury V-8. 119 K2s were built in 1950-52.

The Apollo GT was an effort to make an Italian-styled GT car with American power. Fewer than a hundred were produced from 1962 to 1966 or so. Most were coupes, but a few convertibles were built as well. A Buick V-8 of 3.5 liters (215 cubic inches) provided the power. Final assembly was in Oakland, California. The Apollo GT had a sort of "American Ferrari" vibe.

It's astounding to consider just how poorly-equipped the early Pontiac GTOs were in 1964-65. Despite the GTO's position as one of the earliest muscle cars to come from a U.S. manufacturer, the early GTOs had a pretty long list of deficiencies:
-- 3-speed manual transmission with floor shift standard (4-speed optional, as was a two-speed automatic) -- No power steering (optional) -- Drum brakes with insufficient stopping power given the performance from the Pontiac 389 V-8. The early GTOs were not separate models but were an option package to be applied to a midsize Pontiac Tempest car. And the cars needed a number of other options to be really desirable. The 1964s had dual headlights; for model year 1965 the car was redesigned with Pontiac's signature stacked dual headlights and had an increase in drum brake lining area. Those early Pontiac GTOs are real collector's items now but unless they are given the RESTOMOD treatment, I suspect the driving experience is sub-par.

I always loved the GTO. Neither Ford or GM offered disc brakes in 1964. That option started appearing in 1965 and 1966. Interestingly, the Avanti had front disc earlier and Chrysler as early as 1949 but this early version of the disc brake was discontinued by Chrysler. While the GTO base model was lacking, the options were plentiful. I found this spec sheet from the 1964 GTO brochure. |

Two of the fastest/most interesting 1964 cars in my high school parking lot ('65-'67)...a dark blue tri-power convertible GTO, and a 289 Hi-Po (271hp) burgundy Comet Cyclone. Both stupid fast for the era

I heard about the Cyclone with the 289 Hi-Po from a high school friend but I never saw one. My high school years were the same as yours (Class of '67) and my buddy's dad owned a Ford dealer. This kid was always showing up at school with something with way too much power for a 16 year old. One day he arrived in a 429 Galaxy. That was probably the fastest car in our high school parking lot. The Cyclone would probably have torn it up.

1934 Chrysler Imperial Airflow Series CV coupe
The Airflow had plenty of technical ingenuity but sales were lackluster, and the car was only on sale in 1934-37.
