Petition BMW solution ON/OFF for ASD

I just got back from a 1,000-mile trip and the ASD went like haywire, gave me a headache and made me feel like “Crazy Bear”.

I've had the car for two and a half years now, driving 20,000 km a year. Up until now, I've had a slight fake noise, but every time I've taken the car to the dealer, he's found nothing suspicious.

But in the last few days, this oddity has taken on a new dimension.

I can't take it anymore and I've decided to write to BMW's boss.

If I don't get a reply, I'll take the car to Munich.

Petition BMW solution ON/OFF for ASD

Oliver Zipse
BMW Headquarters,
Petuelring 130,
80809 München, Allemagne

Sir,

BMW must provide a solution for activating and/or deactivating ASD.

ASD noise (for it is noise) is emitted by the speakers, depends on their quality, and considerably affects music reproduction, which is the only reason why options like Harman Kardon are paid for.

Annoying noise causes stress, affects well-being, reduces cognitive performance, makes people aggressive and complicates all forms of communication.
At night on long trips, it's a HORROR, especially for passengers, and a total incomprehension for those who don't want ASD.

When you buy a BMW, you don't make concessions on the absence of noise, silence, quietness and comfort of the cabin.

The ASD destroys all that, not to mention its random behavior. See by yourself.
"I have a 5-second recording of the ASD triggering, but I have no way of linking it at the moment."

Why not just turn it off using Bimmercode or other similar app/OBDII connection?

For the time being, I don't want to touch the OBD connector, as my car is still under warranty. What's more, the information I've received on the forums leads me to believe that this solution is not stable.

My car is equipped with the HK option to which I've connected a MATCH UP10. I thought about the bypass harness, but there is no ASD module.

With the HK option the ASD is mixed with the audio stream in a kind of upstream mix in the main unit.
I think this noise is hidden in the 100 - 250 hz range, which is why HK systems are very poor musically in this range.

So you don't want to touch the OBD port, but have fitted a MATCH UP10 despite the car being under warranty?????
I think that you are just seeking attention.

I'm really sorry for you if you feel helpless, tiny and angry about my problem. Listening to music is a solution that works for me, you should try it.

Once you've upgraded your car radio with a high-end solution, we can discuss how to plug it in and how it differs from the ODB plug.

A therapist might ask you why you wrote a post if you can't help in any way. He could easily deduce that you like to listen to yourself talk.

Thanks for the reply, I don't want to touch the ODB socket for the time being. If it's the only solution, I want BMW to do it.

BMW did not cause your problem, you did.

ASD is designed in a way to not destroy any music experience or make your "head hurt". But the moment you do any third-party work to your audio system (eg. change speakers or amplifier), ofcourse ASD is gonna sound off.

So you have two choices:
- Stock amplifier with ASD on
- Aftermarket amplifier and code ASD off.

Very easy. Connecting to OBD does not void your warranty. However, touching the electrical system (like changing/adding amplifiers) might cause some questions if you ever try to have any electrical work done on warranty.

I detected this unpleasant noise very early before the upgrade and had already asked for it to be removed. Except that nobody at the dealers knows about ASD.

ASD causes the loudspeaker membrane to vibrate in a way that directly and negatively affects the vibrations needed to reproduce music. It interferes with some frequencies and cancels out others.

What's more, the resonances produced by the false drone jump around in the living space like pinballs, affecting the listening experience.

Anyway, I took the car to the dealer today and explained again what ASD is and how it works, and the person who received the car heard and understood that it was a nuisance.

After questioning me about how my system had been installed, I was asked, “Did you use the ODB socket?”. NO!

So I have an appointment next week

Sorry, but I have to call bullshit.
In no way a dealer would ask if you used the OBD port but not ask if you did the electrical work at an authorized shop.
I think at this point you're just trolling.

Either that, or you should change your dealer, if he's so adamant about the OBD port. It might be that they're the one that scared you into touching that. If this is the case, just search for a better dealer.
My dealer never had a problem with anything I've coded in the car.

You should know how to listen without judging, speak without seeking to hurt and understand without necessarily agreeing. That's the only way you can earn my respect.

You are turning out to be a prat here. You just don't want to listen when people try to help with your questions.

If this was not already solved, an I have a feeling it was not, lets see what your options are , why the sound is annoying you and why the option most people suggested is actually what you should consider.

As others said, you already "worked" on the car by installing that dsp, which, I is making your issues worse, but I will come back to that later.

Touching the obd port is not grounds for warranty dismissal, even bmw was selling a little obd dongle that one could use for track days for stats tracking(M performance drive analyser).

Ok, so we already settled on the fact that even bmw provides a dongle that uses the obd, now, the setting that everyone is telling you about is a simple value that does not affect anything else but that asd.
It does not upgrade your firmware or flash the module, so no problem there.
You do not lose warranty and being in Europe, you have 2 year manufacture warranty and then probably another 1 or 2 .
Now, getting back to why the amp is making your issue worse.
The sound amplification device, is changing the sound of your music..but not only music, any other sound that your car makes through the speaker, including the annoying fake humming of the engine.

I really hope you can see that everyone is trying to help you, and now, you get the long version with details, so do what you want with your car, but don't waste your time by looking for other solutions.

One more thing, the reason why some users report this solution as not "stable" is because after a software update, all the values return to stock, including your asd setting. And now , just think about it , if a random update that gets applied over the air(but you decide when to apply) can revert your config, how would anyone be able to cancel a warranty for an entire car, nonsense.

Anyway, enjoy your car!

Just for reference as a self described audiophile, your speakers are taking a significant load from the ASD amplification. Your music will also sound significantly better should you choose to code out the ASD via the OBDII port.

BMW will not solve this problem for you - I can see above you are very adamant about not doing this because you have an incorrect notion that this will somehow void your warranty, however you have already modded the car in another way? Your aftermarket amp is legit increasing the ASD output, and may be putting more wear on your speakers. It's the direct cause of the sound we are hearing. We are giving you a foolproof way to fix it, cheap and permanently, that will not further impact your warranty. There is really no better answer than has already been provided in this thread- you have all the information you need to make your life better and eliminate your problems, and now you need to act on it or live with it the way it is. If you choose the latter, I believe I speak for the community when I say we do not wish to hear any further self pity complaints for a problem that is easily solvable.
