‘21 M340i displayed engine oil 2 quarts low. I just drove about 250 hwy miles averaging 85 mph when this happened. Not sure if the drive distance or speed burned the oil faster. Put in 1 quart royal purple, checked the level and it was showing full. First time I had to add oil and 2 quarts seemed like a lot. Didn’t get a warning at 1 quart. Oil change done at dealer in march 2024. I’ll keep an eye on the oil level. Never had this issue with my 435i.

Pretty common with my 2020 M340i, happens every few thousand miles. I always have a quart in the trunk when I go on long drives. I’m at 50k. It first asked for a quart at 10k.

I have a 21' model @ 22K miles. Never had this issue. I don't agree with the other poster that this is normal. 2 quarts is a handful. I've been on several road trips over 400 miles at 80 - 85mph - no issues.

Your oil and driving style might also be a factor.

I have a 2021 M340i and I did an oil change July 20th now November 12 and I checked this morning to see if I need oil and this is what it read. See picture


I don’t drive far just local city , alwsys on sport plus .

2 quarts isn’t normal , just my personal opinion.

I have 55k miles on the ODO , when I had 15k-40k I never had to top

I have NEVER added ANY oil in between oil changes (6k miles / 10k kms)

Level remains at MAX the whole time.

It is NOT NORMAL.

One thing though - if you do LOTS of short trips - like less than 5 mins each and start the engine cold. Oil will never get to operating temp, so water/condensation will build in the oil. This is BAD, and the oil level will increase. However once you do a decent/long drive that water will evaporate out of the oil and the oil level will then decrease. So maybe that is what you are seeing.

If its not that, then there may well be an issue.

You might be mistaken. I said it is common with my car. Not all M340s around the world.

I think I will do an oil change just to see how much comes out and give me a little piece of mind.

I see a lot of people using these special motor oils having issues with oil consumption, my 2022 M340 has been modded and driven hard since I bought it and I've never had oil consumption issues. I use https://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-E...5?athbdg=L1300 and https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pennzoil-...uart/495194903 for oil changes, 6.8qt and I change it every 5,000 miles.

The Castrol one you mentioned is what I use with 6k miles oil change interval - no noticeable oil consumption, as I previously stated.

I am also tuned, drive hard, occasional track, and plenty of long drives.

How many miles did you drive since last oil change in March, how many miles on your car total and did you buy it new or used? Also did you mod the car?

My 2020 never dropped oil level since new. Original owner, oil changed at 1200 and at 5k and 5k intervals after that. I think the car has around 35K on it. All stock.

My 2015 528 (similar engine I think), came with a quart of oil wrapped in the same fabric that lines the trunk area with velcro stops on the outside. The car was sold that way, so I'm assuming BMW knows it burns a little oil

Did you buy the car new or used? Its a different engine and that is an accessory that BMW offers. My car has one in the trunk as well that I added just in case.

I've got about 6k miles on the oil right now. Car is sitting at about 43k.

2 qts in 6k miles is definitely a concern.

There are of course variables if you are modded or drive the car like you stole it.

If all stock and driven normally, it should absolutely not drop 2 qts of oil in 6k miles.
