I think it's pretty clear what's going on. The G20 platform has the capability to remote update, but BMW isn't confident enough to enable it. Until BMW has gathered enough testing data or whatever, we'll just have to wait or take it to the dealer.

FWIW, my March-build, May-delivery M340i is on "48".

I don't blame them... I can picture it now with this glitchy iDrive system.. half way through loading it onto the vehicle the Bluetooth disconnects by itself and you brick your ECU lol....

I completely agree. Part of the ongoing technology issues must relate to the fact they must be scrambling to figure out a functional software update process too.

But what could be the possible reason for so many software versions for the same platform?

As said before there could be various reasons for doing this, including builds. Microsoft does the same with their windows rollout. It isn't too uncommon for software suppliers but what I always HATE about it is the lack of documentation and communication... Usually all very valid reasons for the version numbers but just produce a proper explanation on your website!

Exactly. I just hope the development team that works on iDrive updates isn't the same one that works on the ConnectedDrive app...

I posted this in another forum, but here is why they are charging. Not that it's justified, but picture what happens when a car/user looses connection mid-update...

I have had the new software installed yesterday at the dealer. A few things I noticed:
  • Live Cockpit: map is bigger and more detailed
  • Live Cockpit: when in Sports mode, a pattern is visible overlaying the graphics
  • Live Cockpit: little animation when changing drive modes (not entirely sure this is new)
  • HUD: different, I think better (bigger) navigation instructions
  • Media inputs: now shows Spotify entry. Clicking it does nothing for me unfortunately
  • Cameras: I think better picture quality, not entirely sure but
    seemed prettier / clearer
  • Cameras: now actually shows my car color (blue) instead of standard grey

I lost some of my settings (seat position memory, sorting of navigation favorites), but not much.

So far only improvements, but we'll see what new bugs are introduced.

Drives me crazy that software updates reset any settings. Seems like another BMW half baked software issue. Also, did you test the CarPlay or ConnectedDrive issues that people are having?

I haven't tested CarPlay since I don't use it. As for ConnectedDrive issues: I'm not sure what the issues are, but if you have a list I can check later.

Use the ConnectedDrive app on your phone and report back with respect to the remote functionality.

I agree.. This should only happen in very very specific cases and not just a regular update.. Proper upgrades just convert saved settings to the applicable format thus preservering user preferences.

No noticable changes. Remote 3D view works once in a while (like it did before).

What is this option supposed to do?

With firmware updates like this it would download the entire update package to the car first and then run the update. I think the car losing power (for whatever reason) would be more of an issue
