CEL but no codes
Hello,
first time posting, would very much appreciate the help! Thanks in advance. I drive a leased 330. Lease is expiring in a month. Came to my car one day to find the kidney grill pushed in slightly and the active shutters slightly out of place. As if it just popped out of the clips. one of the kidney grils just popped out but worked fine. The other had a flap that undid itself and resulted in that half of the kidney grill not working. I think someone just reversed into it or something. no paint damage. I thought to myself, no biggie, I'll just get it fixed before my lease return. That was a month ago. Two weeks ago, my CEL comes on. ok, now we have a problem. I figure its related to the grill. I fix it by looking at bimmerpost instructions on how to swap the kidney grill. I get everything back into place and confirm functionality but the light is still on. So I go to Firestone and they do an OBD scan. No codes. They also tried clearing the errors but the CEL still stayed on. I look around further online and think the computer may just need to be reset. So I unplug the battery for an hour, once plugged back, the CEL was still on. Figured it could be a BMW specific code so I ordered an OBDLINK CX. Just odd that the light came on 2 weeks after I found the issue. Could very well be a different issue entirely. Will find out soon enough. Any ideas what it could be? Visually the car looks perfect once I popped all the plastic parts back in place, car works perfect mechanically and I haven't seen any issues since, other than this pesky CEL. I return the car very soon and rather it not be on BMW's radar at lease return inspection. Any ideas what it could be or how I should navigate it? Thank you |

If they tried to clear the errors, then it's a "permanent" error, meaning you can't clear it with a scan tool, and it will self clear once the problem is resolved, though it may take a few drive cycles. Need to see what the codes are once you get your OBD dongle and can run a BMW specific code scanner (e.g., Bimmerlink). And if you only replaced the kidney grill, that's not the part that will throw the code (the shutters will).
