Extended warranty not though BMW

I am soon due to my warranty on one of my cars.

Was wondering, when purchasing extended warranty do you go though bmw or look for a third party warranty?

what are the pros and cons of each?

If you are going to purchase one, most people recommend not to, then most people recommend getting a manufacture's extended warranty. Some folks though have had success with Fidelity.

Make sure you shop around since prices can vary greatly. There are some dealers that are recommended and can post those if you don't have them.

not to purchase extended warranty at all or not to purchase third-party one?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, most people, experts, etc. recommend not getting an extended warranty.

For those that do want to get one, generally for peace of mind knowing it likely will not make sense financially, then most people recommend getting one through the manufacture.

Keep in mind the battery is not covered so don't get it for that reason.

For most states it is 8yrs/100k but that is increased in some CARB states.

An extended warranty is just an insurance policy and typically insurance co's don't lose! That said, I'd check your mileage with your trusted dealer and ask what service items will be be needed/covered by said warranty over a specified time frame.

That would be a different plan. The Vehicle Service Contract (extended warranty) does not cover maintenance. That would be covered under Ultimate Care+ plans.

EDIT: I realized I talked about maintenance as well as warranty work. My point was, I do not plan on doing any repairs or work on this car. That is why I got both the extended warranty and maintenance plans.

Search the forums. There are dealers on here that will sell you a BWM warranty very cheap.

I bought one because this is one car that I do not want to work on besides switching summer/winter wheels and the rare basic mod.

I don't plan on even changing the oil myself. I have had many project cars, and will be adding another soon, and don't want that with this BMW.

My contact information is below, we are retailer of Fidelity Platinum extended warranty coverage, repairs accepted at all BMW dealerships and licensed independents in the US/Canada.

I just need a VIN and current milage to get you accurate pricing and coverage information for your BMW.

I wouldn't buy a bmw without one. It saved me tons of money since my dealer charges $250/hr for labor and dealers don't charge actual hours, they charge much more.

Just the water pump replacement alone paid for it... Keep in mind people here are getting ripped off on their bmw extended warranties by not calling around.

Someone correct me if this has changed. They charge "book time" and not how long it actually takes.

Book time is agreed upon between the dealer and the whatever agency regulates service departments. The manufacturer says "It will take 5 hours to replace the water pump" and that is the "book time". Then the dealer figures out how to do it in 3.

I had a 79 Firebird with the Old 403. The heater core book time was 7 hours. you had to remove the entire dash and if I recall correctly, pull the engine. The reality was you could loosen the dash and remove the right side fender. The actual time was 1.5 hours.

Curious to know why.

I still have a year left on factory, but
thinking about which way I may go after.

Maybe things have changed, but I know several people who were denied using 3rd party companies. Or maybe they went cheap and that is why.

At least with the factory there is a well established counterparty. Sure, they will look at any claim very carefully, but they have a higher profile, and if they start falsely rejecting claims it will eventually bite them in the behind. Especially in the social media era.

I have had a few cars where I purchased an extended warranty from the factory and never had a claim denied.

On the 330i I have about $6,000 in warranty repairs so far, all completed by the dealer. About $4k manufacture and $2k through CNA. CNA has never denied a claim for me through the BMW dealer.

Hey Dan, my contact information is below, I just saved a CNA customer 50% on their extended warranty coverage. Fidelity and CNA coverage are the same, CNA is essentially re-branding the coverage, same thing with VanGuard and JD Power, all the same Fidelity coverage.

Yeah and I feel like its such a scam because now that $250/hr becomes $500/hr in most cases.

I have 2020 M340i , at the end of my factory warranty I went with 3 yr extended warranty through the dealership...it was 5,200$ .I thought that was way overpriced until I started looking at other options from other companies. Those are over 200$ a month...my car was one of ones that had the issue with oil measurement failure around 15-16%...they are replacing oil pump...it is 3,400$ for the job...I have a brand new loaner while service is being done. I fortunately did not have a tune...otherwise I would not have been covered under warranty...so, I would say ask if you are tuned if they still honor your warranty before purchasing one.
