m performance is carbon fiber right? I'd get it if you plan on going carbon fiber spoiler/mirrors/diffuser but thats just me. If you were thinking about the m performance exhaust im pretty sure you need the carbon fiber tips as well.

Finally painted the tips with Krylon High Heat Max gloss black paint. It doesn't have the engine enamel paint look (black chrome). But it doesn't look bad at all. Though I'd probably use engine enamel paint since this one seems to pick up imperfections even when I hit the top of the painted tip by mistake while reinstalling it.
Reinstalling the tips takes all of 5 seconds.

Over all, I'm happy with the outcome. Now to see if it lasts.

PS - IDK why the last two photos appear sideways. Sorry for that.

For anyone who has sprayed their exhaust tips: did you sand them down first, use a primer or a clear lacquer after?

Picking this up soon and need to change chrome tips asap!

Thanks! I'll post some pictures once I get it and makes some changes (windows need tinting, chrome grill and 330i badges changed to black)

How are your exhaust tips holding up since you sprayed them?

Still look good like when I first painted them.

Very happy with the results.
Where did you get that license plate frame? I am in NJ as well. Nice car!

I did sand down the tips and then used spray paint. No primer. I put around 8-9 layers (overkill, I know). They're holding up fine so far

Thanks! I think I'll definitely sand them down considering they're chrome. Excited now, shame this virus is delaying everything!

The reason I didn't use primer was because I read somewhere that primer isn't supposed to be applied on chrome paint. They could've been wrong and I'm no expert

Now that I think about it I didn't use a primer either. Must have confused the exhaust tips with my rims.

That came out clean!
Currently doing mine with plasti dip to see how it comes out since it is a lease.
Was easy to take the tips out used a screwdriver, light hammering, and pulled it out.

I actually went ahead and plasti dipped my exhaust as well as the 330 emblem[IMG][/IMG]. Came out pretty good, I didn't go the painting route since it is a lease.

Let me know how that holds up. I want to plastidip my grill but I don't know how durable it will be.

Also, where did you get the black BMW roundel from? Vinyl overlay or badge replacement?

I’ve cleaned the tips pretty decently. But it’s too cold outside to spray paint it. I did some reading and everyone mentioned spray painting when the outside temps are 60-70F and it isn’t too humid in order to help the paint bond better. Unfortunately, it’s 35F outside. So yes. Looks like I’ll be running tip-less for a few days/weeks. Car definitely looks weird without the tips. Thank god I don’t see it when I’m driving or when it’s parked in the garage (since I back it up into the garage).

My plan is to spray three coats, bake it (in an old toaster oven that I have and won’t be using again) and repeat it till I have 9 coats of paint. I’m curious to see how that holds up wrt peeling and chipping.

I’ll post the outcome when I’m done with the project. For now, the tips are clean and shiny (I used a Brillo pad to remove soot, tar and dirt from the outside). I have a few cans of Krylon high heat max paint (in gloss black) that can withstand up to 600F continuously and 1200F intermittently. I’m hoping that that should last three years without peeling
Lucky you!

I've done some serious wiggling & pulling and so far I can only get the passenger side around halfway off.

Pull with all your might. Wear thick gloves, hold the rear of the tip tightly, push against the rear tyre with your feet and wiggle the tips. I also laid on the ground under the tips while doing so. The passenger (right) side came off easily. The drivers side (left; without the valve) side took some more wiggling since the locking metal thing was stuck on the protruding part and needed more force to remove. But I managed to take that off in less than 2 minutes. Lots of wiggling and pulling and you should be fine.

That much force. Ok I'll give it a further crack tomorrow

Yup. I thought my exhaust was about to come off when I tried removing the driver‘s (passenger for you) side tip but people use hammers and screwdrivers and stuff to pop it off. So yes. Some force is necessary.

I would def recommend dipping the exhaust, looks much better and it should hold up according to what I've read. I went ahead and dipped my grill shortly after, it definitely looks more better then the chrome, but it was not a clean job on my end.
And it's a vinyl sticker for the logos, no bubbling looks great. [IMG][/IMG]

I wouldn't recommend Krylon paint (what I used). I just noticed that it has started cracking. Could be my mistake too because of the number of layers I used.

Mine are still looking good. I'll keep updated if they start to chip.
