Fuel lid will not open!

Tried to refuel on a long drive and found that the fuel lid on the g20 did not open. Could not find any emergency/ manual release levers. Luckily i had just enough fuel to reach home. Previous generation 3 series cars used to have a emeregency pull tag to open the lid. Stunned that bmw decided to do away with the emergency release. The user guide has a section called emergency release, got my hopes up only to find that it simply said take the car to a mechanic! any way i can open the lid apart from taking the car to the dealer?

Did you try pressing the unlock button on the key fob? That should unlock it too.

When the car is locked the fuel lid is locked. When the car is unlocked, you can push it in and it will open. If that doesn't work there is probably something wrong with it.

Hi, I had this exact same issue on my G20. For some very odd reason BMW removed the emergency fuel release door. You will have to take it into the dealer and my fuel door and opening/locking motor for the door needed to be replaced.

It was actually a relatively slow repair, the parts had to be ordered from Germany, the car was back in about 5 days.

BMW probably saved a whole nickel by excluding this feature.

the dealer replaced the actuator rod. collected the car today. attached is the description of the fault. looks like the root cause was a software fault!! which means it could recur if the same circumstances occur again. quite a scary thought.

yep glad for you. but it's crazy isn't it. a plug in hybrid has the manual fuel release cable, but a diesel car doesn't! What was BMWs thinking really.

Yeah, both the plug lid and the fuel lid both have the manual release. And the fuel lid release is just like in the F30

Just happened to me tonight on my 2023 430i 😤
Only have 30 miles left in the tank and BMW is closed till Monday!
There really is no emergency release cord on these newer models!
Quite sickening to think I spent all this money on my brandnew BMW less than 3 months ago now this is happening😩🤬🤬
Might be my last BMW seeing that the BMW prices are rising while the cars quality drastically decreasing

I feel for you. No worse feeling than getting stranded and having to tow the car. In my case the dealer inserted an air balloon, broke the actuator rod, then ordered a new actuator rod from Sydney. They had my car for three days.

I was shopping around to upgrade but decided to stay put as new car prices have increased by 30% in the past two years. While they do away with basic redundancies like the emergency fuel cap release! And in case of the 3 series they still have the stupid plastic grate pressed against the rear wind shield causing rattles on coarse chip roads.

By the way my problem happened one month after I purchased the car, albeit a demo.
