Glad to see soft tops making a come back. A hard top convertible never makes sense to me.

Get with the program.

Convertible's are timeless.

Folding hardtops are out like dial-up.

Oh man and people were up in arms about the new X5 and X7 grille. Can't wait to see this... I don't mind ugly if it's taking a risk, I just don't want boring-ugly.

Not all of us can get a $60k+ convertible as a third vehicle so having some useable trunk space for at least more than one backpack is pretty nice. I'm also glad that it looks like despite using the same platform the 4er will be very different looking in the front and back, looks very inspired by the new Z4 and 8er.

Plus who knows, maybe BMW will do what they did with the e36/46 and sell a removable separate hardtop for the winter.

I totally LOVED my e93 M3. The folding hard-top was awesome. My partner and I were able to get a lot of stuff in that trunk too -- you just have to know how to load it properly. Taller stuff closer to the seatback, and shorter stuff goes under the drop-down top-holder tray. We also had a customized duffel for the back seat that fit the dimensions of the fold-down seat perfectly (from sidewall to sidewall) and were able to store enough clothes / goods for a two-week road trip (all while retaining the ability to raise and lower the top).

Here's a clip of mine in action...

Hope it can hold its own against the C class vert because that is one good looking convertible (top up or down)

The 4 is getting so big, BMW had to go with the soft top because they're realizing the 3 and 4 are now just big and fat touring cars.

I for one can't wait for this car, if it looks anything like the CSL Concept it will be stunning, huge grill and all.

Yawn.

There was real opportunity to have something special here and after the zing of 8 and the Z4... Boring is back.

Okay grandpa.

Go tell that to Ferrari & McLaren, or even the new Vette.

And convertible's? Convertible's what? If you mean soft tops it's ironic how that's the part of a car that shows its age the soonest.

Folding hard tops are alive & well for those who can afford them over cheaper alternatives with tents.

Enjoy your short lived resurgence while global markets reject the tent.

Time and the market will tell what's antiquated like the dial up.

I don't think the hard top is a question of affordability, nor do I think you can compare a 4 series hard top to the hard top of a Ferrari or McLaren because I doubt those exotic companies (McLaren anyway) has a hard top that adds 400-500lbs to the cars weight - like the bimmer's has been known to do.

I can't wait to hear the complaining from the soccer moms on how they cant drive their car through an automatic car wash with the soft top. Softtops are definitely superior from a performance & space perspective, but the demographic is never going to wash it.

Just looking at the marketplace, the trend definitely appears to be away from hard-top convertibles:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...é_convertibles

The next SL has been reported to be switching to a soft top as well. And once the F33/F83 are gone, the Portofino (Wikipedia page needs updating) will be the only four seat hard-top convertible left.

I have a feeling the front plate area will be this generation's hoot-cut line discussion.

If true, this car will be so controversial lol

The removal of the hard top is neither for weight or aesthetics (the latter makes no sense at all anyway). The removal of the hard top is solely due to the myriad of problems bmw has had with these for years. Leaking during heavy rain, it getting stuck often etc etc... truuuuuust me that's why. I've had 2 of them and it was a disaster.

I'm disappointed that BMW are scrapping hard top!
This is the only 4 seater hard top available on the market...apart from Jeep Wrangler...but this is completely different type of car.

I can't get my head around this why car manufactures are not investing in hard top convertibles! weight is not an issue as you can have more powerful engine, fuel consumption is not massive difference in UK is cheap anyway...

I can see only pros in having hard top over the soft top
I had soft top for a year and love the experience of convertible but not in soft top and decided to sell and bought hard top 430i which is great!

In soft top is noisy, colder in winter, its getting dirtier much quicker and need constant hoovering, cleaning, maintenance to look sharp and hard top is just like another coupe - normal wash will do.
