Even a crappy econobox can cruise on a highway. It is the need for sudden boost that makes the difference and you still have that with the BMW phevs.

But having said that, there are many, many cars out there and everyone should procure what works for them.
I am probably missing something here so don't shout at me - when I enquired about the 330e the dealer explained that the electric motor is only charged from a charging point and does NOT charge while the car is in use unlike some other hybrids.

So to my mind the battery must go flat at some point or switch itself off when it gets to a low level.

Based on that explanation the 330e is essentially a 320i when the battery is flat/disengaged..other than the fact the boot is smaller and it is carrying a lot of additional weight around.

Another thing that struck me is I wonder would will happen if and when the battery becomes unserviceable (5 year guarantee I believe) - the value would take a massive hit.

As I say, I stand to be corrected on this...after all, a bmw dealer explained it to me....

Your dealer is just wrong. I'm driving a hybrid and the battery is charged whenever you lift of the throttle (recuperation) and you can use the engine to charge the car as well in the "battery control" mode.

There is a nice video from BMW explaining the different modes here.

The battery has extra capacity to account for aging, but yeah in the end you have to replace it eventually. Statistically that's after about 8 years, and while not cheap (I guess somewhere around 5k for the parts, but that will get cheaper with time or you will actually get a higher capacity battery since in 8 years we have better technology) it is still significantly cheaper than a full battery swap of e.g. an i3 which is over $20k. Not to speak of the upcoming i4, which has more than double the capacity of the i3 and hence will be even more expensive.

completely wrong, your dealer seems to know nothing about the 330e, it chages with engine running (not much tho) and with regenerative braking (more substantial)

You just need to look at the digital cockpit and see that the "needle" can go below 0 into charge.
