Haha, nice try BMW. Oh look you should like this because we pulled it from our heritage!!
That's all well and good, but not the issue. The issue is that it looks like shit. All three cars have vertical grills, sure, but that's like putting a person from "My 600lb Life" in between two Victoria's Secret models and saying "see, all three of them are people!" But then again, I don't have a degree in industrial design, so what do I know |

I get the vertical grills as a nod to the retro bmw look, except vertical doesn't really fit into the shape of modern bmw sedans and coupes. The old bmws were "boxier" with a more vertical looking stance. Boxy looking cars do ok with vertical grills. The 4 series, and most other modern bmw sedans and coupes have the low and wide look, with downward sloping hoods. I'd imagine it's difficult to incorporate vertical grills into that overall style.
The other thing that creates dissonance in my eyes is the hofmeister kink. The grills are angled slightly inward. From the side view, that gives the front end that shark-like look. Paired with a well incorporated rear panel, it completes the rear-driven look, almost like a tiger on its rear legs ready to pounce. The problem is the hofmeister kink is now a wider angle. It's almost non-existent, and it takes away from that rear drive profile. The different design elements aren't talking to each other. Otherwise, it's not THAT bad. It's just dissonant. It's hard to see the whole car as a sum of its design elements. |

Two of these cars have 'vertical grilles' ... one of them just has a large snout with nostrils almost as wide as they are tall?
The car on the left is a design classic. The car on the right is a historical curiosity reminiscent of early Porsches. The car in the middle shares nothing with either as far as I can see? |

I'm trying to like it but am not quite there. I think it might work for me without a front plate. Problem is that the design doesn't work well with a front plate. Like it or not much of the world has a front plate requirement and the design needs to embrace this reality which it currently does not do.

Yeah, that extension is what ruins it and practically makes it almost non-existent. Don't fix what ain't broke.

I think we really have to wait and see how it ends up turning out. All new designs that break from traditions upset a lot of the older fans. No one can predict with certainty whether one "ruining" design element will end up just being a new design element or actually ruin the car. I'll keep an open mind, even to the new grilles. I'm with you though, my initial instinct is that I don't like them. I don't think anyone who's grown up with BMWs doesn't feel that way in some manner. As long as I can get some 3 series with a manual transmission, I'll be OK for now.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that Props to Bmw for doing something different. They knew people weren't going to like it but went ahead and did it anyways.
