lowering springs vs coilover set. what did you go with?

those who went with lowering springs and oe dampers, did it creak after a year or 2 on your g20? my audi went with that setup and it creaked after 2 years so i thought perhaps it might be better to do coilovers this time for my g20.

not sure if the savings is worth it, and not sure which bilstein coilovers to go with. what are anyone's thoughts on the bilstein evo s and b12 pro kit?

Ohlins R/T for me - absolutely no regrets.

I’m at roughly 23-24k miles with the dinan springs installed, of my total 25.5k miles on the odometer. No creaks. I track my car, for what it’s worth.
I don’t think many G20’s have installed the lower tier coil over systems. Most install springs or go all out for KW’s or Ohlins, as Chubbie did in the above response.

Not to say Bilstein is an inferior company, but there coilover kit is a rather simple one for this chassis that I think people don’t see the value. I think peoples thought proces is “if you want to lower the car and get some slight performance gain and on a budget, choose springs. If you want to get the best available as of now, KW or Ohlins.”

I would second chubbies decision on Ohlins. I had them installed on my Evo X years ago and they were the best modification on that vehicle.

Well stated Peelerec. Another thing to note and what seems to be quite common among m340i owners is their willingness to modify their vehicle is significantly less than the M3 counterparts. I spend a significant amount of time on the G80 M3 forum and those boys have no issues spending thousands on a brand new M3. For me, the m340i is a good daily and is worthy of aftermarket, but for most, it’s just that - a daily.

a quick google tells me this will give me better comfort than bilstein. is this right? wouldnt mind dropping more monies if it gives a more comfortable ride.

my previous lowering springs with oe dampers were stiff af. nice drop and nicer on the turn but it was too stiff.

Ohlins will have better materials, better engineering and greater adjustability. Lol, there is absolutely no comparison between top shelf coilovers and lowering springs. For me, if your budget permits full adjustable coils, you will have no regrets.

Similar but different design philosophy my friend. Either way, they are both good choices.

I have g26, recently installed HR springs, was not my cup of tea. Car looked great but it was way to stiff for me and my struts would bottom out on smallest bumps.
I could lastv2 week on them and went back to stock springs. Will be considering coilovers next, but definitely not lowering springs.

If budget is not a concern, coilovers are the better option.

For a daily driver, springs (preferably adjustable) are enough.

+1 for Ohlins R/T, I was previously on Dinan springs and can say the difference is night and day don't even look at springs if your budget allows. I bought them from Mike too, always got the best prices and transparency IMO.

slightly off topic, but is there coilovers for G26 m440 with adaptive suspension?

non adaptive suspension M340i xDrive on H&R springs with stock shocks. Also did the Dinan ride quality & handling kit, it's just bump stops and dust covers, don't think it was worth it honestly as the car does still bottom out on medium bumps as others have said. Also on cold weather I do get a suspension noise I and my mechanic cannot find. Might go KW V1's or V2's with the goal to improve ride quality.

Well said. Very little to add other than Ohlins do not disappoint.

You all have me wanting to ditch these H&R springs. Anyone experienced both KW and Ohlins on a G20? I’m looking for more suspension travel and comfort as I live in a winter state.

I have a buddy who tracks his G20 M340i as well. He first started his track journey with KW V3’s and then switched to Ohlins R/T. My initial impression of a soft setting of the Ohlins was that the car was on clouds. Very soft. As compared to his KW’s in there softest setting did not comply as well with harsh roads near the track. For that reason, my subjective 20 min experience of both is the Ohlins are better for daily + street + soft + track suitable coilovers. Not to discredit the KW’s, though. They are great as well.

It ultimately depends on which KW model you're considering. Ohlins are often praised for striking an outstanding balance between road comfort and track performance, much like KW markets its V2 variant.
