Digital Key Plus?

'23 LCI - does it have digital key ? Or digital key plus ?

Just got my 330e and it's not entirely clear - but it appears I don't have "plus"

The Digital Key Plus does only come in the new Models like the iX.
The G20 LCI wont receive the Digital Key Plus because it´s not fully based on the new architectur.

That’s interesting… my ‘23 330i will have wireless charging, and I’m pretty sure will have regular digital key… what will I get with that?

I think my father’s ‘22 5 series has the digital key plus

If it´s not deleted due to chip shortage a `23 G20 will receive the normal digital key.
That´s a key card and you can create digital keys for your Apple wallet or some Android devices.

I´m not sure about the `22 5 series but i´m quite sure it doesn´t have the UWB technology for the digital key plus.
The plus just means the iPhone can unlock the car without holding it to the door and can unlock the car the same way the normal key can while approaching the car.

Also - without Plus - the phone must be sitting in the charger cubby to start the car - as opposed to anywhere in the car.

Creates too many charging cycles on phone battery for my like.

I don´t put in the tray and instead just put the top of the phone on the console until the Digital Key pops up.
Start the car and remove the phone.

Just asked my BMW expert and he said the Digital Key Plus is not available of the G30 PreLCI or LCI.
The new 5 series will get the DKP.

Small world OP, I see you're also from Richmond. I just posted a similar question to the bmw subreddit about my m340i that I picked up from Richmond BMW earlier this week.

I'm not giving up hope that DKP could possibly be available in the future. I can't confirm but have a strong hunch that the hardware is already available as it's the same signal the fob uses to lock on unlock the doors within a certain proximity.

Here is a text snip from the idrive 8 announcement...

"BMW has been pioneering the use of smartphones as digital vehicle keys
since 2018. For instance, the premium carmaker has developed a new,
convenient and secure way of unlocking and starting the vehicle without
the user even having to take their Apple iPhone out of their pocket. The
upcoming BMW Digital Key Plus version is based on the ultra-wideband
(UWB) technology already integrated into the vehicle and, for example,
the iPhone’s U1 chip.
UWB is a digital radio technology for short-range high-bandwidth
applications that offers exceptionally precise location identification
combined with maximum security. The BMW Digital Key Plus will be first
introduced for the all-electric BMW iX."

Again, the Digital Key Plus can´t be retrofitted to a G20 (PreLCI/LCI) or G30 (PreLCI/LCI).
The hardware isn´t available and it´s not the same for the keyfob.
The DKP uses UWB antennas that aren´t build into older cars before the iX.

My newly delivered M340i appears not to have the Digital Key Plus. However, according to the UK configurator, the M340i should have DKP as part of the Comfort Access option which comes with the Comfort Plus Pack, which I have. I have also seen on various BMW sites that from 2023 the 3 series has the option of the DKP. BMW have confirmed that my car should have the Plus but have told me to take it up with my dealer, which I am currently in the process of doing.

I like DK, but DKP would be even better. I always have my phone on me, and being able to get in and go without having to go find my fob beforehand would be a nice touch. One less thing to carry or battery to wear out.

I wonder if somewhere down the line if they might allow the option of adding on this feature. I feel like I would even accept a third party solution for this feature if it could be possible.

currently living the non-Plus life of taking phone out to place on charging tray to start up, then putting back in pocket just because I'd rather carry 1 less keyfob

When I ordered my M340i in May, this year, I went for the Comfort Plus Pack which includes Comfort Access and it specifically said DKP. As does the UK configurator. It seems this is incorrect information. As far as I now understand from a lot of confused information, all 3 series, including the LCI are SP18. DKP is only available on later models with SP21. Neither my dealer or BMW Genius/support will take any responsibility for this error, seems like their attitude is it must have been an oversight, tough!

I would have used the DKP but I do not use the basic DK due having always to take my phone out of my pocket and stick it on the door handle! At least with the key, the car can be unlocked and locked when approaching and walking away. However, with DKP, I wouldn't have needed to carry the key fob to do this!

I know this is an old thread but there is a relevant note in the latest press release from BMW about Spring 2024 product updates (which you can see on the post on the main bimmerpost site).

BMW say..

Quote:
As a universal digital interface for data exchange between the customer and their car, the My BMW App offers an ever-expanding number of functions. From spring 2024, Comfort Access with the BMW Digital Key Plus will be integrated into the My BMW App in vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 8, 8.5 or 9.
This is talking specifically about the My BMW App and mentions that vehicles with OS8 will get DK Plus! So, does that mean existing OS 8 cars too, with a software update?

It has always been said that the OS8 head unit does not support DKP, which is correct. But I wonder if they have been fitting the same UWB Comfort Access hardware for a while now (and it makes sense to reduce costs to have one type of hardware?) and they are updating OS8 head unit (from factory and over the air for existing cars) to now support DKP!

If this is only for March 2024+ manufactured cars, it is weird that they would make the effort to support DKP in OS8 cars, instead of just waiting to update those cars to OS8.5, right?

Might just be that UWB hardware has been on OS8+ cars since day one and they have been holding DKP back for EV or 'premium' models?

As the ianir says above, the UK configurator has always said the G2x Comfort Access supports DKP, again another hint that hardware is there, but not enabled.

Fingers crossed this is enabled for all OS8 cars.. especially as my G21 M340i is going into production next week

Maybe I'm too optimistic. But the press release implies this is just a software update thing.

My car only supports the key card and I find it pretty much useless. I keep it in my wallet in case of a dead fob battery.

Yeah agree the key card alone, or the NFC phone version of it ('Digital Key'), is pretty useless. Hence why I am hoping this announcement includes pre-Spring-2024 OS 8 cars, such as the G2x LCI.

I honestly think BMW doesn't have a clue half the time! My wife's iX1 is running OS8 but has DKP. The physical key is different and from what I've read the UWB uses different antennas. I would be surprised (shocked) if this could be rolled out to existing cars. BMW don't tend to prioritise existing customers.

I took delivery of an i4 3 weeks ago that has OS8.5 and that still has the old physical key and DK not DKP.

Yeah it's very much wishful thinking from myself. It would all hinge on them having already been fitting UWB Comfort Access to all cars. Which could make sense in terms of simplifying their parts supply, but in reality is probably not the case. Oh well!

The G20 in it´s current wont receive the Digital Key Plus because the UWB antennas aren´t equipped in the car.
It doesn´t matter if the G20 already has OS8.
The OS8 in the G20 can´t be updated to OS8.5 as the HU4 isn´t capable of OS8.5.
OS8.5 will only be rolled out to vehicles with HU5 like the i4.

Maybe, but a big maybe, the G20 LCI2 (not officialy named) will get some upgrades like HU5 and UWB.
The G20 is still running on SP18 while newer cars with UWB are based of SP21.
