I picked up my M340i today

***Doh! This should be in photo\journal area...

Just returned home from the dealership, so here's my initial impression, coming from an M4:

In comfort, and even sport, the ride is extremely smooth, most of the bumps are soaked up.... compared to the suspension in the F82. It feels like a bigger car than it is (in a good way), and feels planted.

Steering is not as stiff\heavy as I like it, even in sport+ mode... although it might be too early to tell, I'm still adjusted to sport+ in the M4.

The cabin is quiet, you can barely hear the exhaust note, sounds muted from inside.

Still too early to discuss acceleration, but, from what I can tell so far, it will be more than adequate for DD and some track duty.

It's very buttoned down, not as wild\raw as the M car, it has a different character as to be expected. With the M4 you can't help but smile, especially when your at speed on the highway.. The F82 demands that you drive hard\fast!! But, I think the M340 will make an awesome daily driver, and with a tune (eg DINAN?) will shine even more... I can happily live with it during the duration of the lease...I need my adrenaline to return to baseline... but once the lease is up, I plan on going back to a full M.

Congratulations. Beautiful car.
Interested to know about acceleration as well. During test drive it felt like the low end is better vs M3, the top end 5-7K rpm is where it looses a bit. But hard to say without running them head to head.
What is your feeling coming fresh from M4?
I also liked the steering. heavy and communicative. I felt a bit more under steer vs m3 but the car rotates beautifully. Was not expecting rear to come out on 4 wheel drive car so easily - fun car for sure
Bigger tires in the front will help - i would probably do square set up or at least 245 up front (whatever fits)

Thanks!

I have to agree with you, the low end is better with the M340, I've been driving the M4 with everything on sport+ and city driving felt "choppy" if that makes sense, not fluid.. but acceleration on the on-ramp plus you get all the theatre with the exhaust note on the outside(MPE) and piped in sound, really gets people's attention...

I haven't put my foot in it yet, with the M340i, but I would be highly surprised (stock) if it can match the current M at the top end. With the M4 you hit 130+ and it feels like it can keep pulling (even moreso with a M550 or M5). I think a tune can bring out more of the "M" characteristics.. I put the M340 in sport+ (thought I did earlier), and with the windows down I hear more of the rumble and overrun sounds, so the "fun" potential is there.

I'm looking forward to really giving it the beans after break in!

There is plenty of power hiding in that engine.
The revised B58tu should be able to make close to 500hp with a simple stage 2 tune.

Congrats on your car!

Also, what is break-in? Seriously though I haven't "broken in" any of my previous 5 BMWs. Full revs straight off the lot lol.

I think the S58 is getting near those numbers stock so should be no problem for a tuned B58tu

Congrats! What tires did you get? In comfort mode, how is the road noise and engine noise (below 3k rpm)? I test drove a 330i msport with 19 inch Turanza T005 rft tires, and they were quite comfort and also very quiet, since those are categorized as 'performance touring tires'. I know someone has p-zero rft on their M340i, which is a max performance tire. I wondered how do they compare, cause I care most about daily driving and touring on freeway. Thanks!

I also picked mine up today. Alpine white with the ZTK package.

Wasn't sure if I should have started a new thread, so I apologize if I messed up...

Other than not having a manual transmission, I think it's an almost ideal DD for me. Then again, maybe the auto is better for sitting in traffic..

I will probably do at least a tune, but it's already going to be easy to get a ticket on the hwy with the stock power.

I really love the tires so far, although haven't pushed it that hard and mostly short-shifting for now.

I looked at the extra radiator, I think I have to get a shield, makes me nervous.

I like the tech and the adaptive suspension is impressive in that it stays flat, but is not harsh even on rough roads. I had been driving an X5, so really enjoying the handling and how nimble it is.

I agree... two different applications... just trying to share the experience of transitioning from 3 years of DD an “M”, in case anyone
is interested in going the same route.

For me it’s a welcome change of pace for normal street driving. Although, it does seem to have the potential to be something more with some mods...
With that being said I already know I’ll be purchasing an M once this lease is up, along with a “normal” car for daily duties.

I got the Michelin pilot sport 4S, so far road noise is very minimal...once again coming directly from an M4 on summers... I think the noise insulation is better. Even my daughter commented on how quiet the car is, she was upset to see me switch cars... think she’s a future ///M member!

Btw I totally stumbled upon your YouTube video by accident and didn't comment as it'd be like inadvertent e-stalking :D Gotta fill up the next 7 months with car videos until my current lease is up :(

Thanks for the info! Are they rft? Cause the road condition near bay area is not good, I'm thinking if I should go with 18" wheels (790M) to improve comfort/reduce road noise. Not sure how much difference it will make though...
