Stupid question about the opening next to gas cap.

I filled up my car for the first time this evening and noticed this rubber cap/gasket of some sort to the left of the gas cap. I have never seen that before on any other car so I couldn't help but wonder what it was. I Googled it and found an explanation that describes it's where the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) cap would go if it were a diesel engine vehicle.

Does this exist on any other cars? I mean I've driven many makes/models of cars and have never seen that before. I also wonder why such a soft rubber cap is used.

It is a blank space. If it was a diesel there will be another cap over that. It is the same way on my X5.

Interesting. I'm just wondering why they use such a soft, pliable thin rubber cover on that opening as opposed to a hard plastic cap or something. Cost?

There is nothing behind there, that is a blank. If it was a diesel that rubber circle would be punched out and the rubber fitted around the fill pipe. Then a cap would be used to seal the fill pipe.

Thanks guys. Like I said earlier, it's strange to have this really soft, ultra thin rubber cap over the opening and makes me want to poke at it. Lol.

TiMSport You must be having way more fun than me . Haven't even thought about stopping for a fill up yet and I'm at ~310 miles with 1/3 tank left.

Lol. I think I must be driving my car harder than you because I only squeezed 300 miles out of the first tank. I could've driven it an extra 20 miles or so but not worth the hassle. Yeah, I might be having more fun than you.
