Exclamation M340i Oil Consumption

Anyone else having to add 1 quart of oil to their M340i every 2-3k miles? I get the warning light and just take it to the dealer since they are close by to add a quart but seems odd to me?

I do spirited driving every now and then but never had this issue with any of my other BMWs (M3, 535i, 428i other turbo engines I owned).

I'll tell you when I get there. I've only surpassed 300 miles yesterday .

Honestly, that sounds about normal for German cars. I've had similar experiences with pretty much every Audi I've owned to date. Everyone says it's normal too.

BTW, out of curiosity, how much does your dealer charge you to top off the oil with a quart? Also, what oil are they using?

We have a thread for this, you can document your concerns there. Also, this only happens to some cars. There are guys running big tunes and haven't had this yet some of us with no mods experience it.

Ahh still in break-in period the anticipation to push the car is hard. Congrats though on picking one up!

They don’t charge me fortunately at the dealer for the oil. Car has covered maintenance so I think it’s included? Last time I got a quart added my advisor did tell me to buy a quart and leave in the trunk for long trips.

Yup, I've got a little over 20k miles and it does it to me as well. Only mods are intake and charge pipe, no power adders yet.

BMW used to include a quart in the trunk area. Did they stop doing this?

Seems to be a common issue. Check out those threads:

Do you suggest changing the stock/factory oil upon delivery? This whole oil shortage is news to me even though many on the thread suggests its normal. Thinking it's best to change out the factory oil when my car gets here. I have never had this issue in any of my older BMWs.

Where are you located, in hotter climate or if you drive hard switch to 0w30 instead. The car says you can run both and it will burn a bit slower since it's slightly thicker. Some people even run thicker than that with good results.

Southern California. I added a quart of 0w40.

I mean I would drive much more aggressive with my E46 and F80 M3 and not have this issue. Maybe something with the cooling? In any event, I still enjoy the car and adding a quart is no big deal but I am curious as to what causes it. Cooling issue? Turbo issue? Or something else?

Re: Oil level monitor
Does the oil level reading drop gradually, or does it move in larger segments (i.e. 1/8, 1/4...)?
Anyone measure often enough to notice?

BMW has a chart of how many miles per quart is normal, I can't remember what are latest numbers.

FYI, my last 2 bimmers went to 100k+(a I6 NA and a I4 turbo) without burning oil for 6-7k OCIs, for normal(spirited?) DD.

Local dealer does top off oil for free with BMW oil, esp. for M cars.

300 miles, in a month? Garage queen?

Mine is 270 miles in 1.5 weeks. BMWs are built to be driven.

I posted that on April 18th. I had picked up my car on April 9th so it was 9 days officially. As such, I think I drove mine more than you, lol. I've got about 800 on it now I think.

The quart of oil is still included where I am. It's in a black vecro pouch in the trunk.

At 17k miles, topped up half a quart at a track day. Have never been prompted a message. Using 0W-30 instead of garbage 0W-20 which is like water. Changed Oil 3 times already, 4th by the end of this month. Hope this helps!

2020 M340i here, driven for one year, now at 17K , one oil change (@ 9K) by dealer (free of charge).
Using control display gadget to check oil level from time to time, never had to add anything.

Does using a different oil spec than what's recommended have any impact on warranty?

I am at 16K miles and never had to add oil, however, I have been changing the oil every 5K.
