My mom had an E36 after my dad passed, brought back great memories and for the last 17 years I've been in E46, E90, E92, F30, F36, and F33's, an X5 and an X7 for the wife, leasing is quite fun with a new BMW every 3 years.

Let us hope that the G26 is all the utility you desire and all the sexy metal I desire. Cheers!
Hello again! If you check the other associated forum here, you will see the i4 (Gran Coupe) is now revealed. Among the first things I wondered was your reaction. Thoughts? I can't comment further until I see/measure inside the doors/liftgate. The outside looks fine to me. It is much sleeker than my current GT, so I am a bit concerned about what I will (or won't!) find inside.

Hey! Sorry to have been out of touch, I didn't get the notification for some reason.

The i4 looks good, what I imagined the 4GC would look like from a proportional standpoint. The difference between the F36 and the F32 was fractional, just a slight height difference, it was essentially the F32 with the huge side panels cut for two doors. I expect the new GC to do likewise, and considering that the most boring part of the G22 are those long and plain side panels, I think the GC has the ability to be the best looking 4 Series as it makes that zone look more interesting.

What are your thoughts?

Hello and good morning! In some colors, including the color you show, the grille seems less shocking and less of a concern than in others...almost getting used to it by now, which is part of the designer's intention, I'm sure. (This same thing happened in early market research with the original Ford Taurus...yes, I was there.). I think the rest of the car looks just great! I will be quite pleased to have one with the electric powertrain. But, to seal the deal for me, I will need to do the "sit behind myself" seating test, and assess the rear compartment size with seats folded. I want to be able to contain my bike for the moments when I quickly need service (flat tire, etc. I can't do a roof rack and who puts a hitch on a 3 Series?). If the interior space is not improved over the current GC, I may sadly need to look elsewhere, so I am hoping the studio hit that sweet spot that satisfies the exterior design desires while also reaching to some degree for more interior space, a la the departed GT.

The GC is a chameleon. It's magic.

No, as stated earlier, the differentiation is the concealment of the function. It's the best disguised liftback in automotive history. The shocked looks people made when they see the whole back of the car lift up, its incredible.

Well, if you're not a dad and just want to look sporty to impress your 30-something single friends, both the 4 Coupe and the 4 GC are dumb cars, they both inconvenience grown passengers markedly. The 4 GC is for that dad who has kids and wants his coupe back. The doors and legroom suit a child under the age of 14 swimmingly.

Frankly, I don't understand why BMW even makes the 2-door coupe anymore, in fact I can see a future where they only make the 4-door coupe. 2 Series it makes sense, not so much the 4 Series. The 4 is the size of the old 5, it keeps growing, its proportions for the 2-door already look goofy with that enormous rear quarter panel. It doesn't feel like a coupe. It feels like a sedan that's strangely lost two doors.

Like I said, BMW has struggled to differentiate the 4GC from the 3 Sedan. When it first came out, it was a YouTube joke that they all cracked "it's the 4 door version of the 2 door coupe which is a 2 door version of the 4 door sedan", the conversation was around why BMW would release such a seemingly redundant car.

You contend that the 4GC exists for its liftback utility and I contend that the 4GC exists for its sexy-as-fk styling. I think both can be true. My son's goalie equipment thanked me every day I used the liftback, but the stares I got from jealous dad's with this sleek new variant made me really happy. After years of being in the same old 3 Series like everyone else, the GC was a breath of fresh air. When my lease is up on my F33 I expect to be back in a G26. I don't think BMW is going to screw it up. It's going to replace the G22 when they drop the 2-door like they dropped the manual transmission.

This is exactly why I bought mine; I didn't want a trunk, I wanted the more unusual and 'new' liftgate. Still love that feature. If it were a regular trunk, why not just buy a 3 series sedan like 'everyone' else? If BMW does away with the liftgate in the new GC, Audi still offers the A5 sportback as an choice when I'm done with my 4GC if the style still suits me.

Keeping my 2018 Audi S5 is not an option. If the Gran Coupe is not a liftback I'll move down to the 2022 Golf R.

I am perplexed as to why the uncertaintly about the Gran Coupe liftback continues. The G26 is a liftback, as was its predecessor. It has been seen in online photography.

"As with the last 4-series Gran Coupe, and unlike the 8-series Gran Coupe, we don’t think BMW has stretched the two-door 4er’s wheelbase to create this thing. It’s hard to tell if the hatchback-style opening of the outgoing car has been retained, or if it’ll use a more saloon-like boot arrangement as per the 8-series GC." Car Throttle

I certainly hope you're right - I've been looking forward to this car for four years.

A low-information journalist filling up column-inches with controversy. It's a hatch.

Could you point me to the pictures of said lift back? Not saying your wrong. I just would have thought the most talked about thing would have some sort of photos by now. I really hope it is as I love me F36. I can fit some objects that my G01 can not.

The i4 is a G26. The codes are G26 and G26BEV.

Was it ever confirmed if the 4GC/i4 were going to be based on the China LWB 3er? Similar to the outgoing 3GT.

Looks extremely well composed on the ring despite the fact that it's not a full DNA M model. I wonder if it will have improved characteristics compared to the M340i. In the f30 gen I remember millimeter variations and slightly lower COG between models.

No, but it's been confirmed unofficially since forever, or well, January 2019: "And that also means that G26 will be a true mix of 3GT and 4GC: long wheel base with a more streamlined hatchback body" -- https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...99&postcount=1

Probably late May to early June, though the i4 reveal is said to happen in early June, so my guess is probably late May as the 4GC will start production in July already

If the coupe is anything to go by, it might be GT like as well.
