since ordering my 330e im looking into orderin a podpoint. i know the 3 series only has capability of the 3kw charger, and with the OLEV grant this is £449 (un tethered) and £479 (tethered).
But is having a pod point actually worth it, or is plugging it in to mains power sufficient? |

I would say install a podpoint or similar. I have an EV Mini Pro, charge time approx 2.5 to 3 hours compared to 8 plus hours on 3 pin.
And surely it will add value to your home. In 5 to 10 years I’m sure one of our cars will be pure electric. Get one whilst there still is a government grant! |

Ive had one fitted in preparation for mine. I was planning to go via the OLEV grant route, but i was getting quoted daft money for a simple install, i was getting quoted £750 or so for a cheap WALL E 7KW unit. So I decided to source a used pod point from Ebay and had it fitted by a local spark. This cost me around £400 inc materials, and i had a 3 pin socket fitted outside at the same time. The OLEV installers are taking the mickey on prices, they have so much work, they dont need to be competitive anymore.
That said, Ive only had one fitted as im planning to get a full EV for the wife in the next 12 month. It all depends on your usage, i want to get as much usage as possible from the battery, and i would like the option to be able to pre condition without impacting range. |

I have a Zappi charger fitted in my garage and it really is excellent. For what its worth it links with the solar panels on our roof and in summer you can (and I do) choose to recharge purely on solar. Whilst its no huge saving, its actually a nice feeling.

I was originally waiting for a Countryman PHEV and got a BP Chargemaster 30amp Type 2 Tethered unit fitted £549.
Worked well with the MINI E they loaned me (7kw) As shakey707 said the 3 hour charge time is beneficial expecially if you do multiple journeys a day. Also preconditioning does not impact on your drive away mileage. Last edited by ADIUK; 10-27-2020 at 10:38 AM.. |

I know I regret that I followed it. Your decision but a) the 7kw won’t make any difference to charging b) it’ll enable full charging without any loss when preconditioning.

If you want maximum charge and a warm/cool car in the morning the 3kw option isn’t enough. Preconditioning wasn’t factored in. |

I've had my 330e now since Sept last year. I regularly get 29-32 Miles from my home pod point charger, plugged in via a socket or from other public pod points.
As soon as the car is on with heating I lose up to 7 miles but with the heating turned off it holds the charge. Not so ideal this time of year though. Charge also depends on when the car has charged vs when I use it. I.e charge when I get home in the evening and use it in the morning it may show 29 miles. If I plug in before I go to bed and use in the morning I'll get 30. I've found the key is to set the charge time on the app or in the car so it's ready roughly when I leave, this is where I've been getting 32 regularly, they seem to lose miles after being fully charged and sitting idle. |

I charge mine at cheaper rate in the early hours of morning so its ready to go to work. First frost of year today so used the pre-condition function on app for the first time. (Car was still plugged in from charging up). Worked a treat! However, does anyone know if the car will auto pull power from the cable to pre-condition or will it take car battery power and therefore eat into my range? I noticed the range was lower than normal but not sure of this was simply down to it being colder. Or do I need to programme the car, telling it where to draw the power from?

My charger is a Myenergi Zappi. This then has an additional Harvi wireless sensor. This is installed in the electricity box. You can then choose on the app if you want to normally fast charge (obviously it will use Solar power if its available) or if you choose Solar only it will recharge only on the power from the panels. In the height of summer I charge it like this as it does not matter how long it takes. But when you drive away knowing your battery has been recharged on solar power it really is a nice feeling. I think the whole thing was about £800 of which £500 was a grant. That was all fitted and working. I love it.

Depends on your tariff.
About £1.80 if 15p kWh |

If I precondition I wait about 20 mins after set departure time to allow the charger to "top up". The heater can draw 5kW so my 3.7kWh charger cannot keep the battery topped up. Only after the heating has finished can it do that. Roughly 1.3 kWh needed so 20 minutes. Last edited by ADIUK; 04-15-2021 at 08:49 AM.. |

(see link below to switch and get £50 free credit!) Would be even less if you could get a proper home charge point and charge fully within the 4 hours.
