Are BMW drivers a bad look look on BMW? (3er related)
I'm sure this is an often discussed subject with Bimmer drivers driving like a-holes. I was freshly reminded of this fact witnessing a dude at my local Trade Joe's the other day. I think he saw me in my parked Audi S3 across from him and thought he'd show me who's boss or something. It was night so I didn't get a good look at which platform 3 series it was, may have been a G20, not sure. In any case, he thought he'd be cool and "try" to lay a bake next to me as he hauled ass out of the parking lot like a tool. To be clear, it was a failed attempt but he proceeded to drive like an idiot in a crowded parking lot at night anyway.
I've also seen other BMW drivers in my neighborhood driving at speeds that are reckless in a community with cars sometimes parked on either side of the street and pedestrians. I have to admit, this is one of the few reasons I don't like being in a BMW. I think the reputation is richly deserved regarding drivers. I'm sure I'll change my mind when I am actually in my new car though, at least I hope so. |

I don't have the statistics in front of me, but I believe BMW has some of the youngest drivers of the luxury automakers, so that could explain some of the hooliganism.
But beyond that, there may be a case of confirmation bias happening. You hear about bmw drivers, and now anytime you see one misbehaving it exponentially strengthens your bias, even if 5 other drivers in civic type r's are driving like assholes (no offense to civic drivers, the type r is an awesome car).

Especially here in LA, the typical BMW driver stereotypes are no stereotypes, but rather reality. Last night my girlfriend and I were in the freeway, second to last left lane, cruising along at 80. Roughly one car length ahead and to my left was some sedan going slightly faster. Suddenly I see an SUV approaching in my side mirror; brand new X6M. He was gaining speed ridiculously fast, and decided to not slow down but rather cut me off and immediately cut off the guy in the left lane and continue cutting through lanes until he disappeared. He had to be have been going no less than 120, my car actually shook a little when he came past. Guy next to me hit the brakes and moved over behind me. Moments later a gray 7 series rushed after the X6, flying by me. People like that may hurt the image of driving a BMW but they sure as hell make me feel better about myself when I use my turn signals.

Probably true. I came across an M4 driver last week who thought his (or her; all the windows were heavily tinted) dad owned the road. I was pulling up at a red light (on a single lane waiting to turn left) and saw them approach my car (I was in the SQ5) fast from the lane on my right. Bugger then pulls up right in front of me and waits there (there were cars in front of me but not in front of them). I thought they might've assumed there were two lanes to turn left and realised their mistale (that it was a single lane to the left) and let them pull ahead of me (no turn signal to indicate they wanted to but I assumed seeing as to there were no cars in front of them and they didn't move forward). They floor it and almost crash into the car in front of me. At the next traffic light, I was in the rightmost lane to turn right (and the M4 was two lanes over to the left). I didn't slow down too much since it was a green light. I see the M4 suddenly slow down and the moment I approached, they cut across two lanes right in front of me and slowly turns to the right. That got my blood boiling since my wife and baby were in the car with me and I had to brake hard to avoid crashing into the M4. I leaned on the horn and let out some choice expletives while the M4 turned right and disappeared. I wish I had installed a dash cam in the SQ5 (been too lazy to install it). I would've uploaded the footage of that asshat on YouTube to try and embarrass them.

Another telltale sign of an asshat BMW driver is one that constantly changes lanes in traffic and never using their blinkers. I chuckle when I see they make up no ground on you whatsoever by their antics as everyone ends up at a traffic signal in the end.

Exactly why I have a dashcam on every car in the house if you want a good wireless one, there's one on amazon called dragon touch, $40 lifesaver. I got footage of some young bro in a straight-piped 4 cylinder Camaro stopping in the left lane and turning right into a parking lot on the other end of the street, while I was in the right lane next to him. He was trying to cut me off to get into the parking lot before I did. He even stopped on the ramp, forcing me to screech my brakes into the rear corner of his passenger side bumper. My Challenger's entire front end needed to be replaced. The joker then claimed I was at fault. My dash cam footage of the accident, and his sister violently cursing and screaming in my face, made him completely liable, and he ended up paying out of pocket because his insurance was expired . Dash cam is a 100% must.

Being an asshole driver makes you an asshole driver. The vehicle can accentuate this behavior, but it doesn't do it by itself. You could make the same generalizations for ratty Civics/Accords/Altimas and pickup trucks. Aggressively fast (or slow), weaving lanes without signals, meandering back and forth over lines, reeking of weed, etc...

Ah, if I had a dollar for every straight piped 320i that drove in sport mode from red light to red light. I'd be over on the Alpina XB7 owner's forum by now.

When I used to live in SoCal years ago, I always noticed females driving black VW Jettas at high speeds on the freeway while applying their makeup. I literally remember a b**** riding my ass on the 405 with her vanity mirror open and doing her makeup.... like WTF?! |

BMW drivers are regularly ranked as rude if not reckless. I may exceed the speed limits on a regular basis, but I signal every lane change, keep right, pass left, and grant distance between cars. I have no sympathy for asshole drivers who get tagged or worse.

Interesting how the article ranks the actual model as well as make. I see Toyota Celica in the list and wonder how old is this damn article? That was a surprise. Honda Element? LOL. It's not that old of article though.... Last edited by TiMSport; 02-27-2021 at 07:26 PM.. |

I've found the stereotype to be true as well. The strange part about it is how much MORE I was rev'ed on or tailgated once I drove a BMW (by fellow owners!). Very strange. Every other brand I've driven have mostly been a "tip of the cap" type encounters when we cross paths.

This is the risk a car brand takes when they make a vehicle for (nearly) every financial segment out there.
BMW caters to the masses... And the masses are asses. It's one reason why I've kept my Macan around.

Most of the A Hole drivers I see are in pickup trucks and SUV's, not BMW's sedans or coupes. Tailgating, driving with their high beams on and driving reckless every day, just a very aggressive type of driving. Are they jealous?

There's no point in being reckless near other cars, you never know how some driver in a Nissan Altima is going to do. |
