Which drive mode do you usually drive in?

I had a quick search but didn't find this anywhere - though I am a bit surprised it hasn't been asked so apologies if this is a double up...

I want to know which drive mode everyone usually drives in, or what your individual settings are?

I have noticed a lot either seem to go with comfort or with sport individual, but I havent seen many people say adaptive.

For those with the adaptive suspension, what are your thoughts on that mode? And will the car stay in that mode as default without coding?

I’m an ‘adaptive’ guy and sports individual when I’m having some fun.

Generally Sport Individual or Comfort if looking to increase the MPG on a longer journey.

Unfortunately you have to code if you want the setting to remain persistent else it will default back to Comfort.

I think my Sport Individual is set to:
- Steering = Comfort
- Suspension = Comfort
- Engine = Sport Plus
- Transmission = Sport

Enobar ,

Thanks to @Tam the Bam's advice,I drive normally in Adaptive mode (even start up mode), since it learns my style & has some real pick up. When entering highway or just want to play, it's Sport

Coded start-up in Sport Individual but mostly use Comfort Plus (also coded) around town in traffic.

It's a great drive mode and uses the available torque like a diesel. None of the other modes seem to do that. Suspect its Alpina specific for B road cruising.

Adaptive initially seems like an attractive option but it doesn’t open up the exhaust valves so the engine noise is muted. As with my previous 2018 440i Coupe, I therefore use Sport Individual with suspension and steering set to Comfort (steering is unacceptably heavy and suspension harsh in normal Sport mode) but the engine and transmission set to Sport (I find he engine feels like it’s “bogging down” in Comfort). The other advantage of using Sport Individual is that it automatically switches off the loved by eco-warriors but incredibly annoying Auto Start / Stop function!

For daily driving, Sport Individual:

Steering- Comfort
Engine- Comfort
Transmission- Sport

And move the shifter to the left when needed.

I coded the Auto Start / Stop memory and the menu to enable the open exhaust valves in all modes. Definitely left it in Comfort more than I used to!

Love Sport + with the gear shift moved to the left. The MPE sounds glorious in that mode.

Otherwise, its Sports Individual: Stays in 7th gear on highway which prevents that bogging drone sound in 8th with gearshift moved to left.

Steering: Sport
Suspension: Comfort (bad roads in North Texas)
Engine: Sports +
Transmission: Sport

Long freeway trips: Comfort or even ECO for the gas mileage

When I had the M340i...always in Individual, then switch to Sport Plus for spirited driving.

Engine - Sport
Transmission - Sport
Steering - Comfort
Suspension - Comfort

I’m not savvy or brave enough to try and “code” my car!

Adaptive mode does not learn driving styles.

Here is some info on Adaptive mode from another forum:

"I asked BMWGenius to explain Adaptive Driving Mode in more detail, including whether or not it switches between comfort and sport depending on the situation. Here's what they said.
The Adaptive Driving Mode is a unique driving mode, separate from COMFORT, ECO PRO, and SPORT. While driving in Adaptive Driving Mode, the vehicle does not switch to COMFORT or SPORT mode automatically. However, characters of COMFORT or SPORT will be implemented, depending on the situation.

The vehicle is considering many factor to determine the optimal drive feel. Along with acceleration, steering, and speed, the vehicle is also factoring in driving conditions, braking, cornering speed, input from the xDrive system and Navigation data.

When the Navigation system has an active guidance, the Navigation data is used to anticipate curves, crossroads and type of street or road that you are driving on. For example, it can select the optimum transmission gear in advance, potentially enhancing efficiency.

I responded with this:
One more question: Some have suggested that Adaptive Driving Mode learns how you drive over time and adjusts itself based on that history. Is that true? Or does it just adapt based on the current situation without regard to history?

Here is what they (a different person) said:
In Adaptive mode, the following influences on the driving style are taken into account, among others:
• Longitudinal dynamics
• Current speed
• Pedal sensor position
• Cruise control (sensor data from ACC radar sensor) *If equipped
• Sport shift gate for automatic transmission
• Turn indicator
• Steering wheel movements
• Navigation data

"ADAPTIVE" reacts to the current driving style. The affected control units can change their parameters on the basis of the detected driving style. This system will not use previous driving tendencies to change settings for the current trip.""

So far in my very limited time in the car I've driven almost exclusively in Sport mode. That is for steering, engine and tranny. For me it strikes the right balance but I haven't done any lengthy highway/freeway drives yet. Even then, I tend to be in sport mode on any vehicle I own.

Most have commented their dislike of the heavy weighted steering of this car when in Sport/Sport + mode but I personally love it. I especially liked it when I drove a nice 5 mile stretch of highway that has long, curvy sections that elevate up and down. With that really tight and heavy steering feel, it felt really good in my hands. I can't think of the right words for it but it's like I'm pulling on a tight rope and it's bringing me in precisely where I want the car to go without too much input in the steering angle. The stability of this car so far has been phenomenal.

One other thing that I tried for the first time is manual shifting. I've been in Sport mode automatic the whole time until today. I actually really enjoyed the manual paddle shifts as it of course shifts right when I want it to and has a nice grunt to back it up. Very enjoyable. For the record, with my S3 I drive it in 100% manual mode so I'm accustomed to using the paddles. Even though this ZF8 isn't a DCT, it feels almost as quick with its shifts which is nice.

Making sure you shift before hitting 4,500rpm.

Oh yeah, I haven't gone bonkers with it yet.

Well there may have been a couple of brief moments it exceeded that but no problem. BTW, I keep hearing conflicting stories on the break-in of the M340i. My SA literally told me I don't need to follow a strict break-in procedure as its been designed to be driven hard from the start. I realize this is a controversial subject and not limited to this make/model either.

I'm going to go by the manual, there probably is a reason they recommend it. The break-in seems to be the same for all of the I-6's.
