Noob exhaust question

So I used to own a 2017 340 msport that came brand new with MPSSK installed by dealer. I liked the aggressive sound it had and thought it was perfect.

Well I recently updated to 2024 M340 and I thought the m340 would have a similar aggressive exhaust note with some crackles and pops like the MPPSK , was kinda under the impression car was just a new version of what I had.

Well needless to say the stock exhaust sounds pretty week and I can barely hear any crackles or pops and not even sure if they are being piped in by the “bmw iconic” sounds option.

Kinda looking for that MPPSK sound my old car had. I haven’t planned on unlocking DME or tuning anytime soon.

I guess the TLDR is : is there an exhaust system that is closer to the MPPSK for this car? If I wanted to act like a tool the MPPSK used to pop and bang turning heads but this car sounds soooooooo quiet. Was looking into the MPE but the price seems ridiculous to me? Unless it actually sounds/provides what I’m looking for I guess? 😬 like don’t need cat delete or DP BUT something with some damn personality lol

2500$ for a muffler back MPE? Sounds crazy 😹

Congrats and welcome!

From what I have been reading, get the AA catted downpipe and the MPE. This will be my next few purchases in the upcoming months.

Some will say AWE, but I want to retain the valve.

I too had the MPPSK on my 2018 340i. Damn, I miss that car and the way it sounded!

I would recommend shopping at getbmwparts.com as they are a vendor here and have discounts.

I bought the MPE a week after I bought the car. I drove one with and without it at the dealer and decided I had to have it. sure its $2500 but it has a valved functionality and was designed perfect for the car. I love it. I just bought BimmerCode and an an OBDLink CX to code out the fake sound though, because it wasnt needed with the proper exhaust.

I have the AA catted DP with MPE and love it since it does retain valve functionality. With that said, you will not have many pops and burbles with the current MH setup on our G20’s. The closest you can to that is with a catless downpipe and a more aggressive exhaust such as AWE Track edition and of the like.

+1 for a more aggressive exhaust

Aren't the crackles, pops and burbles more software coding than from the actual exhaust configuration? I mean the exhaust changes the loudness and tone mostly, correct?
I think it's been noted that the 2020 model had more crackles, pops and burbles than the models since then.

Would recommend AA downpipe. Easy install, fully reversible, and a more meaningful start to get more sound.

I would go for our catback exhaust. It will make the car much more lively but unfortunately you won't get the little pops on your model unless you flash the car.

Why not both? catted downpipe + a catback exhaust

If both is an option that would definitely be the way to go.

B58 exhaust sound amazing with a downpipe.

That’s what I was worried/thinking about. Didn’t want to get DP or MPE and still not have that effect 😩

I think you will have to tune the car with BM3 or similar tuner to turn up the cracks and burbles, regardless of what DP or exhaust option you choose.
I personally don't like the cracks and burbles, so I don't mind that BMW toned them down and actually I'm glad they did.

+1 the downpipe and exhaust definitely help make the burbles louder but the flash tune is the most important factor

Catted Down Pipe

I have 2 main questions on here, So i have a CPO warranty, but i want to get a catted downpipe, which downpipe is the best option for me, if i do get the downpipe will it void the warranty, even if it does i can just take the new one out and put the old one back in for the temporary warranty work.

The Active Autowerks Catted downpipe guarantees no cel and has the longest history of proving this claim. Technically the part itself cannot void warranty, unless it is proven to have directly caused an issue.

Start off with downpipe and see how you like it. IF its not enough get an exhaust

I too am in this same conundrum, for my '21 340ix. I was contemplating just an MPE upgrade but if you install a catted DP and MPE (or other 3rd party valved exhaust) is there any other pipe(s) required or optional? What is meant by flash the car? Don't meant to hijack the OPs thread but the information in it is very helpful. As you can tell, I don't have any experience with BMW exhaust systems and related emissions equipment. Would there be any expected HP gains with this set-up? TY
