Exclamation Window tint triggering auto-dimming on both displays during the day

Hey everyone,

I just had window tint installed all-around and I immediately noticed that it's triggering some sort of auto-dim feature for both my screens. So in the day time, the vehicle thinks it's night time, and it's dimming my displays to where I can barely see either of them. I tried increasing the brightness with the little dial next to the head light switch and that did nothing. I also tried increasing the brightness through the display settings and that also did nothing. Also couldn't find any auto-dim feature in the settings that I could disable.

Per the enclosed image, I think the auto-dim sensor is in this black portion next to the speedometer because when I put my hand over it, it dims everything and when I take my hand off, everything brightens up again.

Do you know if there's any way to turn off this auto-dim feature for the displays whether it be through a setting or coding? I imagine other owners who are tinting their windows are having the same issue?

Thanks in advance, guys!

I actually just got tint also a few days ago, and have not noticed any issue with the screens like what you are seeing. Though my tint is 50% in the front windows (thank you, dumb Virginia laws). It's F1 Pinnacle tint, in case that could be a relevant data point.

But I didn't realize the sensor for the auto-dim is in that area you highlighted...I'll play around with it on my commute tomorrow and see if I do notice any peculiar activity.

@dpod25 Where did you get your tint done? I am in Arlington and taking delivery in about a month, I'm currently leaning towards TintFX with Suntek CIR.

I just got the F1 Pinnacle too! I think I'm 60% in the front.

Thanks man, let me know what you discover tomorrow during your commute 👍

I have noticed the same issue with my car. Here in downunder Australia, we re allowed to go up to 65% tint. I hope the daytime dimming feature can be coded out. Why can't they have one brightness for daytime and one for nighttime (when headlights are on) - like cars used to!?

When the screens dim is your headlights coming on too? I know with the F30s at least you can code the headlights to come on earlier or later than normal. Maybe setting it to later will make it less sensitive? Hopefully we get coding on the G20 soon.

I have the same issue, but in our X7. We can tint very dark here in Florida, so I'm sure that's the problem. It happens far less frequently now than it did when we first got it done, which is also odd...

So here's my update...and I don't think you will like this. I basically didn't seem to notice any issue with my screen dimming.

To confirm, I did try to cover the area you highlighted and the screen remained bright. To make the results more conclusive, it was bright and sunny outside during my AM commute while I drove back home in an afternoon thunderstorm. With the thunderstorm, my headlights then did switch on and hence the brightness of both screens did indeed go down. But increasing the brightness dial brought them back to full brightness.

I'm sorry if that's not the result you were hoping I'd have. Perhaps you could double-check the screen brightness with your headlights on vs off. Also, maybe try testing both outside and in a parking garage somewhere.

Hope you get this issue resolved, definitely keep us posted!

LA Tint in Sterling. It might be a bit of a drive for you, but I think it's worth it. Geoff, the owner, and his team have done top-notch work with both of my cars. I paid around $400 for F1 Pinnacle on all four doors and the rear window.

Hey dpod, thanks so much for the detailed write-up. I'm glad you're not encountering the same issue as I am!

Going to take it into the dealer tomorrow and see what they say. Will report back whenever I figure this out! 👍

The dealership says that the auto-dim feature of both my displays can't be coded out otherwise it'll throw up error codes.

My tint is actually 15% all-around, not 60% (not sure where I got that number from). So it's pretty dark. Going to try and lighten it up to 30% or so and see what that does.

Also, I would suggest using a high quality nano tint. That should generally reduce interference while holding down heat gain.

15% tint in CA? That'll be an interesting conversation with the CHiPs motorcyclist. Here in NV the cycle cops carry a light transmission meter and have no mercy on issuing fixit tickets for front door glass that is too dark.

Haha yea, would definitely be an interesting convo. Damn, sounds brutal in NV!

I guess I won't be tinting my front windows anymore. I would have to have 5% in the front just to match the rear windows.
