Told by BMW genius to change oil at 1200 miles

Picked up my M340i 2 weeks ago. I pretty much had all options added except for xDrive. Got ceramic coating done few days ago. I'm loving this car, it's such huge improvement from my older 430i.

I went to the encore delivery today, which is standard at BMW. The genius was quite knowledgeable and was able to answer all questions I had. To my surprise, the genius told me I should change oil at 1200 miles. Per my understanding, that's only for the pure M cars as they have special break in oil.

The question here is not saving $100 oil change or not. I'm just curious do we really need to change oil that early for non-M cars? I'm also hesitating to take my car to dealership if it's not necessary. My older 430i was machine washed at dealership even if I told them not to do so.

Any thought or opinion would be appreciated.

Regardless of whether a Genius or anyone else said change the oil at 1,200 it’s totally unnecessary. Save your money.

Congrats on the new car! Looks really good.

Read your manual. I never heard of B58 engine using break in oil.

Genius not such a genius.

And the car wash issue you mentioned......Same issue for me. Frustrating!

BMW seem to like auto car washes!
I saw a series of photos taken by a member of the U.K. BMW Car Club at BMW U.K. Thorne, one of the facilities for preparing new and secondhand vehicles for resale and low and behold an auto paint bashing washer could be seen!
I understand the photography has now been banned within the building.

This is sad...Fun fact is that the detail shop where I got my ceramic coating done said they appreciate all the luxury and exotic car dealership in SF bay area for making their job secured. They have plenty of Ferrari messed up by dealership and they could perform full car paint restoration(polish)

The break in oil change is mostly for the rear diff on M Cars that have the M Diff to get out all the metal stuff. The M340 doesn't need it. Drive and enjoy the car.

Maybe it was an "extremely stable genius" that doesn't know what he is talking about.

It's not necessary but I don't have an issue with what the Genius suggested depending on how he said it. Whenever I talked to anyone interested in buying a BMW and questions are asked, I always try to provide as much information as possible and within context. What BMW says is required is the minimum that someone needs to know but I will occasionally throw in what we as BMW drivers sometimes do because these are real world experiences. It's up to the other party what they choose to do.

Besides, it's not like owners here don't recommend other stuff that's not included or mentioned in the manual.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I agree with what you said...My main concern is that I'm not capable of changing oil myself, and I'm trying to avoid taking my car to dealerships. Every time they ended breaking something new while trying to work on/fix something.

I actually agree with the BMW genius. There are plenty of threads about break in oil at bobistheoilguy.com and most conclude that it is better to change the factory fill early due to all the debris in the oil from engine breaking in. Lots of used oil analysis show wear metals especially iron at high parts per million. I personally will be changing the oil in my G20 at 2500 miles and will do a used oil analysis. I have roughly 2200 miles right now.

Re washing the car, I always state to the service guy that I do not want it washed and I place a a4 piece of paper on the dashboard with "so not wash" in a large font .

The last dealership that washed by car against my instructions lost my business.

@AP makes sense, dealership not following instructions = no business.

I am doing my oil change at about 7000Km now as I intended to keep my G20 for a while. Told the Service Advisor to put on the work order, No Car Wash and added the sign in the front dash.

We work hard to enjoy these rides, especially coming from a non-premium brand vehicle.

I was also confused, I did mine at 1200 miles and they provided the oil. Though I just dropped it off for service at 2300 miles since it asked to get topped off again. I noticed a small leak on top of the engine cover so I dropped it off to make sure I'm not driving a ticking time bomb.

Note: I am almost exclusively driving in Sport Plus.

No need to change the oil that soon. I am so glad my store hand washes every car instead of a car wash. Some of our clients would freak out if we did that.

No need but ive done 4000km changes on both b48 and b58. and the oil was full of metallic deposits.

Normal. High Iron, copper, aluminum and silicone levels but that is normal for a new engine. I am just glad I got all that crud out of there and start fresh.

Good. Seems to confirm the need for an early oil change doesn’t it?
