So this is where the testing came in. We decided to strip it again and apply the same percentage (20%) but go back to a good quality ceramic tint that has a lot of IR rejection. We did Formula One Pinnacle Ceramic. IMMEDIATELY the dimming issue was back and worse than any of the previous tints and the original tint I had when I bought the car. Again we stripped it, and this time stayed with the same brand (Formula One) same percentage (20%) but switched to their dyed line of films with very little to no IR rejection. Looked exactly the same when done from the outside, but the gauges were immediately bright again and no strange up and down dimming based on sun location, time of day, cloudy, sunny, etc. It's stable and brighter at all times. We also did some testing by rolling down the driver's side window and holding up various brands of tint, ceramic, non ceramic dyed, non ceramic carbon, etc. It's not as effective of a test because obviously the other windows are tinted. However, we were able to see similar results for me to be very very confident in all of this testing and what effect each type of tint has on the light photocell. |

Indeed it is Formula One Classic. That being said, from my crazy testing it would seem that most if not all dyed films will not give much of an issue (unless you were to go with limo tint 5%). Light transmission is a part of the problem but infrared rejection is definitely a bigger part of the problem. Most dyed films have very little or any at all IR rejection (even the good color stable brands like 3M and Formula One).

I just took delivery of an M340i a few days ago and was planning to tint the windows next weekend. So glad I found this post beforehand! Was planning to get pinnacle 35% too.
For those that have pinnacle or another ceramic tint installed, is the dimming issue more of a minor annoyance or would you say it renders the displays close to unusable? Also, how do you feel about opening the sunroof as a solution to return the displays to normal brightness? I really want to get my windows tinted, both for the heat rejection and the looks. Ceramic is the type I've used in my previous cars given the better heat rejection so hoping I can continue the trend with my new ride. |

35% is decently light so you have that on your side, it's just the ceramic portion that could cause issues. |

Most likely you'll be okay. 35% is pretty light and you're in a sunny region. You may notice the dimming if you are in an area with a lot of shade from trees or taller buildings. Otherwise you should be good (of course you would more than likely be even better if you don't go with ceramic).

Reviving this thread-
Taking my M340 in today to get ceramic coating and tinting done. The shop says they have dyed tint, along with a few other types that range in pricing. If I'm reading this correctly, I should be getting the dyed film with little to no IR rejection, correct? Want to make sure I get this right and avoid the auto dimming issues everyone has been reporting.

Now keep in mind that even dyed film will cause some dimming if you go too dark, but comparatively it's not as bad. If you go 25% or less you will still notice some dimming, it's just not as noticeable.

30% dyed film will definitely be good (again it will still trigger some slight dimming...but I've also seen dimming on cars without tint!). I finally landed on 20% dyed film and it's a good balance. There are moments when it dims slightly, but nothing as bad as any carbon or ceramic films I've tried on my car.

No problem! It ended up not being much more than a partial cost for one re-tint, as the shop I was working with wanted to figure it out as well for future costumers of theirs. Frustrating yes, but not terrible as I wasn't out of pocket much. Still just angry that I can't get the tint I want without having to make sacrifices. If they ever come up with a solution for this, I'll definitely go back to the ~18% ceramic film I had before.

This is a super reputable shop in the twin cities area (Tint Pros MN) and they know their stuff so I have faith it will work out. Had I not read these threads I woulda went for a 20% ceramic tint that probs woulda washed out the dash. We get tons of really bright sun out here

Guess my tint shop decided to go w 30% 3M dyed film as I believe this film still has some type of IR properties. They said if I'm not happy w it they'll add another layer to it. I'll post my findings next week after I have some time w the vehicle.
On another note they had a PDR tech in the shop today and found a small dent that had to have been there when I took delivery. Fixed it for free! If anybody is in the twin cities area I highly recommend Tint Pros MN

I really wanted 20% all around (minus windshield) but 30% will still be better than stock I suppose!

Nope. Only work around is to go to a lighter tint (20% or lighter) and going to a dyed film (no ceramic or carbon based films as they mess with the IR portion of the sensor).

Hello everyone,
I've made an account to report my personal experience with tints. I've been following this thread as my usual first mod is to head straight to a tint shop, and I was concerned with others' experiences with the dimmed display. I went with a 15% tint - Xpel color stable series (Prime CS I believe it's called) and I haven't had any noticeable dimming on my dash. I've already driven in cloudy, sunny, and nighttime conditions and I have no issues. This particular model only has ~27% IR rejection. Because of this I do notice I need to keep the AC running a bit higher to keep cool as compared to my previous vehicles that have had tints with higher IR rejection, but I only consider this a minor sacrifice. Hope this helps someone in the future who still wants dark tints. |
