BMW ConnectedDrive - purchase vehicle functions

BMW have released a video for the One Series advising that HIgh Beam Assist can be purchased using ConnectedDrive.

It will be interesting to see if this functionality is released for the G20 and what other options will be made available if the car is fitted with the relevant hardware.

Considering both my 2011 Peugeot 508 and current Ford Mondeo both had/have HBA as standard I'm sure the hardware is there in the G20. I'd pay a tenner for it ;-) They've clearly packaged it as fringe benefit of laser lights to get people to buy that...

Actually! When I had a chat with BMW rep before ordering my 330e, he mentioned that I can actually order HBA without Laser light package.

But when I was placing order, HBA was only a package.
If HBA was available via connectedDrive - I would dish a tenner too

It was the same situation when I placed my order - it was only available as a package with the laser lights. I may have to dig out a tenner as well!

A bit more info is available at BMW Blog

Has your car been added to connected drive? I believe that with my previous BMW's, options such as Car Play only appeared once my vehicles VIN has been added to Connected Drive. It could of course just be available on the 1 Series at present.

Hopefully, someone who has already taken delivery of their G20 may be able to kindly look at their connected drive to see whether the option to purchase HBA has appeared.

The tech to purchase options is nice and a good idea (probably inspired by Tesla). Not sure I would pay 176 euros for HBA, rarely drive with my full beams on.

You would be surprised how often High Beam is switched on with HBA

Not sure how you can order an extra button for the indicator stalk online? Cars without HBA won't have the extra stalk button.

Now you have spoilt the story and deflated the possibility of getting some thing for a lot less than buying it at the outset. Perhaps it will be a virtual button?

Plus one for the amount time lights are at high beam when you let HBA do its thing, pure entertainment watching them dance around oncoming vehicles and over, round and down either side of a car in front.

Well, you have the camera/sensor near the rear view mirror. It is used to send the signal to the HBA to turn the high beam on (when there are no lights/cars around) or off (when there is an oncomming traffic, or the tail lights of other car).

That is that simple.
The sensor IS there, at least on each and every picture of G20 I have ever seen yet.
So essentially, function could be added easily (you enable function via menu or so).

In the BMW Blog article, it mentions that "features like the Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Go will be coming soon". I thought that Adaptive Cruise needed the additional radar sensor in the lower front grill - maybe not?

As with so many things these days - you'll probably find that it's more cost effective, and more efficient from a manufacturing perspective, to add all of these sensors in to every vehicle - and then activate as / when they are paid for.

Means they can be quicker on production, and if the sensor costs to BMW are relatively low - the profit they'll make on the activations should cover the outlay for sensors on redundant vehicles.

The options have appeared on the German connected drive site for High Beam Assist for EUR 180 and Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go for EUR 880:

Looks like the VIN then needs to be input to see whether the option is available for the vehicle.

So if you look on a G20 without Driver Pro pack it doesn't have the radar sensor in the middle of the lower front grill to provide the adaptive cruise control function. Hence I can't see how they can software enable something that doesn't have the hardware to support.

Guess the hardware for this probably costs a few ££ but can imagine that given the ubiquity, the HBA hardware is pretty cheap and might even be built in to the current lane departure tracking camera unit, which is standard on all recent vehicles. Maybe they've built the radar unit in a 1-series down to a cost where it's just fitted as standard and only enabled when the customer pays for it. The software-defined car... :-)

I'd guess it's part of the collision avoidance stuff, quite a few markets will be making it mandatory in the life of this revision so it would make sense (although the same goes for the G20 and that's not got it, but who knows!)

Guess we will have to wait and see. The video of the 1 Series shows the hardware button for HBA already fitted. When the button is pressed, the driver is offered the option to purchase the functionality. However, the configurator for the 3 Series does not show the button, so it could just be functionality for the 1 Series or indeed the configurator not having been updated.

I agree with you about the HBA camera but I would think it unlikley that a manufacturer would be being willing to carry the additional cost of the radar hardware on the speculative basis of a future upgrade by the driver.

My 2021 Nov manufactured G20 was delivered with the button, but without HBA. When I press, it says that the feature can be acquired. Unfortunately ConnectedDrive Store is not available where I live
