First Scratch: To DIY or Not to DIY?

I left my car briefly while I went to the grocery store, and upon my return, I discovered a scratch on the door. It doesn't appear to be a dent, but rather a sharp object seems to have scraped the clear coat. Should I attempt a do-it-yourself repair or seek professional services to fix the scratch?

You may want to try glaze/polish first and see if that improves, if not it may need a spot repair.

If you're able to fix it on your own, then i'd go the DIY route. If it won't come out clean, then definitely go the professional route.

If it's not through the clear coat you may be able to rub it out with scratch remover. If into the base coat I would try touch up paint. If you get the door professionally repainted they will have to blend it into the adjoining panels. It will be costly and not as durable as the factory finish, and depending on who does it, it may not be a perfect match in different lighting.
Scratches sooner or later are just the cost of doing business sad to say.

Stupid people. Always one to scrap your day.

If I see someone doing this, it will be warm in the parking lot.

Me? I'd try to polish it out. If that doesn't work get a professional if it's really bothering you. Every time I've tried using touch up paint the results ended up looking worse than the scratch. Granted I'm not the most artsy guy, but still I just avoid touch up paint anymore.

Try www.drcolorchip.com. It’s pretty effective.

I agreevwith tturedraider , try Dr Color Chip. I've used on my current & last car, as well as my wife's and it works great!!

They sell a small kit, reasonably priced-- all you need to know is car's paint code

Use a hand polish to lighten it up then decide. Touch up paint needs to be done right to not make it just as noticeable
