To those lamenting the loss of the hard-top, thankfully, at least at least as far as I am concerned, the conversion to a soft-top is clearly a done deal. I can't think of a recently designed convertible that has a hard-top anymore. From what I understand, even MB will be converting the SL to a soft-top with it's next refresh / redesign. I didn't and wouldn't consider a 4 Series vert with a hard top.
While I love my M235i, I know the day will come when I'll need to replace it and sadly, word is the next version of the 2 Series will be Coupe only, leaving the Z4 or a 4 Series vert as my only viable option in the BMW family. The Z4 M40i is very nice, but I have a few issues with it, mostly it's just a bit small for a DD for me, especially the trunk. Hence my intense interest in the next m440i or M4 vert. I like what I am seeing so far. I just hope it isn't much larger, if at all, than the current 4 Series vert and hopefully it comes in at 4000 lbs or less. I like the way it looks with the top up, however, as another poster mentions, with the top down it looks a little long in the rear. Ideally in my mind the perfect shape and proportions would be that of a slightly smaller 8 Series vert. Only time will tell as the camo is slowly stripped away. Until then, like I said, I tend to like what I see.

Not really, see Mondial. The California/Portofino do an excellent job of showing the ugly high bustle required for a four seat folding hardtop. Look at how much lower the rear deck of a Gran Turismo convertible is than a C/P. Drive both and try looking over your shoulder. In the Mazzer, you see traffic. In the Fezza you see the rear seat.

The metal-folding hardtop fad is over.
Finally! Bring back the good old separate hardtop.

And with hardtop on, you have this nice B-pillarless coupe. Actually I love the hardtop so much it hardly every comes off.
