3 Series Touring - Boot Space & Dogs
Hi All,
I'm currently in the market for a 20-21' M340i Touring MHT, moving up from a 17' Seat Leon FR 1.4. I'm wondering if anyone here has a 3 series touring & a larger breed dog and how the boot space is? I've got a smallish male German Shepherd (34kg) and a baby on the way so looking for something that's big enough for us but not too big. He's got elbow dysplasia so an SUV is not an option (and I don't want one!). I'm trying to work out if a 3 series estate will be big enough instead of getting something bigger like a 5 series or an A6. Thanks! |

Hi
I have a G21 320 D and a Golden Retriever, she fits into the rear no problem. For comfort she needs to be on her own in rear with no other luggage although a small suitcase/ baby bag wouldn't be a problem. I would also recommend a rigid BootBuddy Liner the only downside being you will need to take it out if you want to drop the rear seats to carry any large purchases / tip runs etc. |

Thanks boristhebold , that's really useful to hear! Our GSD is slightly smaller than all of the Goldens around here, so good to know they would fit. Thanks for the rigid bootbuddy suggestion, I'll take a look at that!
Do you think you would manage to fit your dog and a boot divider in there pushed as far to the side as possible? |

I had a Skoda Octavia saloon before I bought the G21 340i Touring and the boot in the Octavia is noticeably longer length wise, but about the same width wise, but still slightly wider than the G21's boot. The Leon estate's boot will also be a little bigger than the G21's. I'm certainly not trying to put you off buying a G21 btw, but if boot space is quite important to you just be aware that the boot may not be quite as big as you expect it to be. |

In all honesty I've been on the edge of thinking about a 5 series but all I really need is space for the dog (and I just can't find a 540i I like). If I can't get a him and a divider in I'll just have to settle on a compact pram either in a cubby or in the rear footwell. I've already accepted a roof box will be necessary for any holiday trips. I've got a dealership fairly close by that has a m340d that I'm planning on arranging a visit if they'll let me throw the dog in the back 🙂 |

There’s a post on here with pictures of my g21 with my two dogs in a crate, in the boot (two Jack Russell’s), for perspective I put my daughters english bull dog in the crate and he’s a big boy, I looked earlier but couldn’t find the post.
We also fit in 3 grandchildren and the dogs on a regular basis, the dogs don’t need the crate so I’m surmising that A dog and a pram (depending on the size of the baby and how big the pram needs to be) would fit no problem. Short story, in 1969, my mum, dad, two sisters, me and a dog went to just south of London camping, albeit with a trailer and a ‘continental’ tent, mum was attending a GPO conference and dad and I were attending Wembley for the england v Scotland match (we lost 4-1 with Colin Stein scoring Scotland’s goal), in a mini van towing a small trailer Us children had an old SMT bus seat in the back for our seat! If we could do that, a wife, child and pram is a racing certainty to fit in a 340 Touring |

I have a Catalan sheepdog (20kg). He goes in our M340i plus a couple of bags just fine. I’d reckon that if you can keep 2/3 of the floor space for the dog, that’s plenty for them to sit up / turn / lie down / stretch a bit. Not sure about a pram+ dog in one go though.. I’d need to defer to others on that. If the pram goes on spare back seat, i think you’d be fine with dog +Couple of bags.
I thought about a divider , though could only find one that goes down the middle. the dog can’t go anywhere, so not sure if it was worth it… Plus side for 3 series : the glass hatch is a game changer for dog. when you open the boot door, you never know even if a well trained dog will leap out as its opening. So with the the glass hatch, you can open that , put lead on, close it and then open the boot door and if dog jumps out, you at least have a lead to grab ! |

My lab - RIP - would fit ok in my G21 but I wouldn't put anything else in there with him as I wanted him to be able to sit up, turn around etc. if he felt like it.

I bought a m340i touring so we could do some road trips with our two golden retrievers. We also have an astra tourer. I would say the astra has a slightly larger boot. I think the BMW maybe a bit narrower higher up. Both dogs fit in fine so far for dog walking trips and I'm sure also fine for a longer journey, they tend to sit rather than lie down when in the car anyway. One thing I did do was to buy a travall dog guard instead of using the supplied net (as shown in the Goldie pic above) - I find it gives a bit more space, plus much better visibility in the rear view mirror.

Thanks everyone and love the pictures!
I managed to end up near a dealership in the Lake District a few weeks ago on holiday and they let me bring the dog down to see how he fits. Apparently very well, even looked like I could comfortably get a divider in there to make some some space for a compact pram! |

What an upgrade. You'll love it. The M340i Touring is a "do everything" car. I can't offer any advice on dog fitment as our terrier mixup only weighs 4kg and sits on the passenger's lap.
