Knee Airbags
I noticed up in the main G20 Forum that one of the members had his car written off after an accident (RIP 330i), but I noticed in the pics that he had knee airbags go off. I dont see anywhere on Australian spec that they list these... can anyone who is local confirm if your car has knee airbags? Its more out of curiosity than anything - I've read a few articles which actually says they are no help.. but im just curious since my last 2 cars have had them and it seems this one maybe doesn't.
I can remember making the (fairly fresh faced) sales person go bright red some time ago when i was looking at my car at the time - a Subaru and he told proudly told me it was one of the first out with knee airbags... Before I could stop and think about it I quipped "oh is that for the driver's knees or the passenger's head?" It went... pause.... chuckle..... bright red face... punched in the arm by my partner. One day my humour will really get me in trouble somewhere... ![]() |

The pre-LCI cars in Australia do not have knee airbags. I don't know for sure if that changed for the latest models, but I don't believe so. The 5-star ANCAP result was without knee airbags but still very convincing, being the best achieved by a mid-sized car at the time.
Remember that the US cars have quite different airbag specs and settings due to the fact that seatbelt wearing is not mandatory, and so the airbags in American cars and overseas models sold in the US are often larger, more numerous and more aggressive to achieve better protection for stupidly unbelted passengers. Why anyone has an issue with using a seatbelt is beyond me ... I'd invoke natural selection, but the absurd US legal system sees to it that people are unjustly protected from their own idiocy at the expense of the rest of society. |
