I made this same comment in another thread and it was not taken well.

Exactly. Probably they’re mostly old people, I don’t get it. Like those who buy iPhone SE over iPhone 13 to have a button

Or maybe they have no idea what costs what.

News flash: R&D and dev costs that goes to that totally new software and the BOM of 15” way brighter, sharper screen and faster CPU are exponentially higher than that plastic gear lever and than keeping the old system that I have in my car right now.
There is no ‘cost savings’ in this interior.

And I have idrive7 and 2021 M340i. My car is NOT better than this one just because I have it

I think the front end, side profile and 3/4 view looks great! That rear diffuser/bumper though…

those black plastic bits on the sides.... yikes

Wonder what made them go "ya know the m-performance diffuser add-on for the pre-LCI? We're gunna make it 300% bigger and make it standard so no one can avoid it"

The exterior is a welcoming improvement.

The interior makes you wished you went for a pre-LCI. This new trend of removing all buttons and placing tablets with sticks on the dashboard somehow does not sit well with me. Now the shifter is also gone.

Was hoping to upgrade our 330i to a 330e but it'll give me anxiety to drive without the buttons and the lack of traditional gear selector.

It’s ok, the best part is idrive 8, as I had the opportunity to use it a few hours earlier, as I test drove iX.
It’s very solid improvement, and going from idrive 8 to idrive 7 in my 21’ M340i really felt like quiet a downgrade.

If I had an order on G20 in place, I’d cancel it and wait for the new one, just for idrive 8.
I dunno what you're doing but I'm on apple carplay 95% of the time, don't need a bigass curved display for that since I'm barely ever looking at it

Really hoping they keep the M-shifter on the M3 facelift. I'm not a fan of the "Shift Nub" on the 3 LCI.

I think the new i3 (the 3er, not the egg) actually looks better than the M Sport/M340i. Hope it's that same design for the base 330i LCI. Not happy about the shifter, 1-8 shortcuts, and half the physical buttons being gone.

Anyone else notice with the rear that the body line at the bottom of the trunk just ends and doesn't flow with the bumper? :

Exterior looks good, apart from the lifted edges of the rear defuser look a bit fussy. Interior I'm not a fan of removing buttons, but curious to see the interface as BMW are some of the best at in car tech. Does increase the appeal of the X3 which retains the current interior button layout.

Also a shame the options haven't really changed, would be good to see carbon roof (or at least sun roof delete), M seats and noise insulated glass as per the European spec cars. I'd say it's a pretty conservative update overall.

Shameful there is not M3/4 that is derived from this design. Oh well, not in the market anyways.

Take it from someone who has experience manufacturing electronics, not necessarily is iDrive 8 "way more expensive". Most likely BMW gives budgets to each team and they figure out how to build their kits within the defined budgets.

Most likely the only component with an increased cost is the large curved display. However, this display is offset with a simpler dash design, a single screen to install, less wiring, HVAC module elimination, simpler assembly, etc....

It's all a function of overall cost.

IDrive 8 is a push from BMW marketing as a way to compete with other market segment cars.

Screens are cheap. It's a commodity item.

Cheaper to slap in a screen rather than design a dash around a screen (ex E90, E60)

This comment extends to other offenders outside of BMW but anything overwrought like that for the sake of "sport" only looks tacky and will look tired over time (over-stylised chunky plastics, wings/spoilers, huge diffusers).

This is why I sometimes prefer the non-M sport vehicles because I just think the calmer, more restrained design looks cleaner and ages better with time.
