Hello,
I recently just picked up a 2020 BMW 330i X Drive.
Coming from Audi, I'm very happy and impressed with all of the features on this car. Audi had a very watered down version of Audi Connect in Canada and it was quite unfortunate.

I have just a few questions:
1. How does one get map updates?
I can see that I have the North America LIVE 2019-2. I'm assuming by now the 2020 maps should be out. I don't see anyway to update them. How do I do this?

2. How do I get a software update?
I have software version from 2019. My understanding from reading on the forums that there is a March/April 2020 software update. When I go to the software update, it says no updates available.

Hi Michael.

BMW only release a couple of map updates each year. My understanding is that the "2" represents the sequence of updates for that year, as opposed to a month. So you have the 2nd 2019 update. There were only 2 released last year for all of Australia and haven't been any yet for 2020. I imagine NA is similar but perhaps someone local could confirm this?

As to your system, the latest version is 03/2020 but the only way to get this is through dealerships. Unfortunately BMW don't seem to have come through with remote software updates yet, despite 2 years of promises. A few people received 07/2019.75 late last year through the remote software upgrade function and nothing has happened since. It will continue to say no update available until BMW reactivate this feature.

My advice would be that if you are running at least 11/2019 and don't have any specific connectivity issues or other bugs, don't worry about updating your system at this stage as a lot of people report complete loss of all settings / seat settings / preferences during the update. Plus you'll have to leave your car at a dealer for a day, if you can even find one who is willing to do the update which most aren't without a lot of arguing. Latest version I'm aware of is 03/2020.30.

1. In my car, when there is a map update, it pops up in the notifications list and I could update it from there. Or else, in the map settings, I believe there is an option for update.

2. OTA iDrive software updates aren’t available yet. You’ll have to take your car in to the dealer. Depending on the dealer, they’ll either update it for you or they’ll say they do updates only if your iDrive has issues.

1) As stated you can get “over the air (OTA)” updates. Another way is to get a download to your pc/Mac and update via USB in the car.

Your post reminded me to have a look and I’m now downloading Europe live 2020-1 to my Mac.

2). Yep at present OTA updates do not appear to work for all. Dealer updates are the option for most.

Since getting the car I can't use the Connected Drive app for anything. (Can't unlock, lock, find the car, remote view and etc.) I notice that I am on software version: 07/2019.39.
I'll have to make an appointment at the dealer.

How do I download the maps to a USB?
I don't see an option to download them on the BMW Connected Drive website.

OK ..here goes.

Go the connected drive portal on the internet. If you search for bmw connected drive in your search engine you will see it.




Log in using your connected drive account and scroll down the page ‘till you see the next screenshot. Press the details button



Press the link as arrowed on the next screenshot.




Go the connected drive portal on the intranet. Log in if necessary.



Choose ‘Manual map update



Choose which download you want . Windows or Mac. (I think this will need to be done on a pc or laptop) Screenshot below



This will download the ‘BMW Download Manager’. Once downloaded start the program and log in .....

You should then be able to download the latest map.

Once downloaded extract the zip file. Once extracted open the folder that has been created and copy the files that are in the folder to the root directory of your usb stick. Then insert in the car.







Seems like the update seems to hang for a while at 89% but it does get there. Takes around 20+ minutes to do the install.

Unfortunately, it looks like Canada may not have that Cockpit-Control on the website which is weird.

I don't believe this works for US vehicles, unfortunately, unless something has changed recently.

EDIT: We're still forced to use Automatic Map Updates in the US.

If I were BMW, I'd have already fired the whole division and started over.

Downloaded yesterday to my USB flash, and updated the car today! Took about 20 mins ish, and hung at 89% for a bit, but all done... thanks for the guide

I don't know how it is in other regions, but in Europe the map updates happen on a quarterly basis, not twice per year as someone indicates above.

Regarding OTA iDrive updates, I received 11.2019 OTA, but the 03.2020 can only be obtained by taking the car to the dealership. I got mine updated a week ago without any issues, and it actually fixed some weird problems I had been experiencing.

The latest iDrive software version right now is 03.2020.40 and for the maps, in Europe, is the 2020-1

Just checked the “bmw download manager” and it still shows Europe 2020-1 as latest map update for my car.
