G20 roof bars
Hi Guys.
Does anyone know, if roof bars from previous generations have same fitting elements which would fit G20? I am thinking to look for OEM roof bars but wonder if there's more choice than ones from the dealership |

I have a set of after market Cruz roof bars and fittings for my previous F30 - they are an exact fit for the G20 - however the bolt size is larger on a G20's roof - used to be M6 on the F30, M8 is too big on G20 so assuming its an M7 bolt..... but still have not borrowed a mates m7 tap to test fit this theory

FYI Thule have released a fitting kit for the G20 - Kit 3174 Fixpoint XT. Looking at the instructions for this kit it includes a tap to rethread the fixing points on the roof.
I also looked at the BMW roof rack, part number 82712457808, which according to my local dealer “On first installation, the threads in the roof channel must be re-cut with a thread-forming screw (included in the installation material)”. Not sure I fancy doing this to a brand-new car… |

Installed Roof Rack from E92 (2013 335) on G20 (2020 M340)
Hi everyone, Thought this info might help someone else. I just got my G20 and wanted to transfer the roof rack from my E92 to it. Initially I found that the anchor bolts needed to be larger (as most have found here) I can confirm that that a M7 x1 20mm length worked very well. I did have to chase the thread with a tapered tap to clean out the hole (very light cutting) I also had to tweak the distance between the feet of the roof rack a little to get it to line up well but that was easily accomplished by loosening the screws on the underside and adjusting to fit. Sides closed well and locked and of course the sun roof also clears no problem (wasn't really a concern)
So to summarize M7 x 1 SHCS 20 mm long and chase with a tapered tap for installation. Hope this helps someone else !! I happen to buy the M7 screws on amazon, not easy to find and griped about the price a bit but they worked well Link below https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 |

I have the exact same problem on my 2020 330i xDrive. I'm nervous about jamming the M7 bolt through. Clearly my "old" rack with the M6 bolt does not work. I did exactly as you and tweaked the feet of the crossbars for a perfect fit - easy enough. Just nervous about harming the fixed nut in the roof with the new M7 bolt.

Just going through this at the moment. I have the Thule wing bars with bike racks and 753 feet. Need to get the 4023 kit for them which apparently was also for the F30.
Couldn’t find them anywhere as seem to be discontinued. Ordered some from eBay coming from Germany. Hope this works else could be expensive getting new feet as well. |

Thule roof rack
Hello all, first post
just have 330e g20 from old 2015 320d Old Thule roof rack won’t fit as m7 now from m6 Could get the Thule 3174 adaptor kit anywhere all out stock. Need a roof rack for the holiday now Solution use m6 helicoil kit that uses a m7 x1.0 thread sorted. Old Thule 753 m6 thread now fits Will get the proper kit when back in stock |

Thanks will order one , although had the helicoil in the garage so got me going on the holiday.
Surprised the m7 thread in the car roof was quite tight and needed a tap down to clean the bottom threads for sure. Doesn’t seem right having to clean the threads on a new car with tap. I was going to order some m7 bolts , although non standard and would take a few days to arrive. Last edited by Ted1050; 08-14-2020 at 04:24 PM.. |

90% there...

Clearly I need to switch out the M6 for the M7, but this doesn’t look easy as I may need to cut the M6 bolts to come out? How did you get the M7 bolts in? I’d love to keep using the same rails. They fit perfect, its just bolt fitment now... Follow up question: Does the original installation tool work with the bolts in the amazon link? Are there OEM M7 roof rack bolts that anyone has found? One thing to watch with the newer Evo wingbars is that the Thule load stops don't fit, and I'm not aware of any third party ones that do either.
Obviously doesn't affect things like cycle carriers, but if you want to pick up some doors or lengths of wood from B&Q then load stops are incredibly useful. It's madness to have that t-track and not be able to use it properly. |
