Advice on potential purchase

Hi all,

I currently have a g20 which is going back after finding substantial repaired accident damage. Having just purchased it before lockdown.

I have found another car that ticks the boxes, however given my prior experience of my current car, I have went through the prospective car with a magnifying glass.

The front left passenger door was jutting out slightly when it closes and I saw a small section of the rubber frame seal was folded in, where it meets the sill and inside of the car.

Secondly the front reg plate has been re-positioned above the original drill holes. So the top part of the plate cover a few cms of the bottom area of the grill. Very odd positioning.

I have been told that both have been rectified, the kicker plate has been adjusted and the reg plate moved back to the original position.

My concerns are why we're both like this, is there a reason why the kicker need adjustment? Prior work, damage? Same goes for the front reg plate, why would they not use the original screw points?

There's no record of repairs and there's no indication of any, no resprays etc.

I might be looking into it too much giving my experience with my current car. However any advice from more technical minded folk will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The registration plate may have been moved upwards to stop it interfering with the sensors below it. I had mine moved upwards after I noticed it failing to spot vehicles in front. Only a few cm but it made the difference

Gary1985 Your experience of late is the very reason I would never buy second hand.If you are going to buy second handchoose a pre-reg with delivery miles or a very low mileage example, there appears to be quite a few on the BMW UK approved website.

Best of luck!

Hi guys, thanks for your replies.

Your right about my experiences of late, so much so that I avoided this car.

I found a cracking pre reg deal and went for that today.

Just need to see how I will get it, with lockdown. As I'm about 500 miles away from it.

Might need to get it delivered tbh.

Congrats. Think with Sturgeon playing games the ability to get to the dealer will be some weeks away yet though.

What did you go for this time? Pics?

That's what I'm thinking, i can get a plate driver to transport the car for £336 & about £500 for a flatbed transport.

I got a exact same spec as my current car (one that's going back)
320d, mineral white, m sport, tech and premium pack, except this car has xdrive and 21 miles.

Good choice.

Is that the dealer that has quoted those prices?

No they said that they don't provide a delivery service, I assume they mean to where I live.

The prices quoted are from online vehicle delivery specialists, one quoted me over £1000!

Does the dealership have a branch in Scotland that they could ship the car to?

Unfortunately not, they're all based in the south west of England.

Think this all depends on someone's budget and also what options they want.

Got mine last October and was a ex demo with just over 8k miles on. Fully loaded, 53k brand new I paid just over 30k and never had a problem with it, arghhhhh said it now!

23k loss in 7 months, shocking!

Obviously don't know exactly where you and the car are but easyjet are I believe starting internal flights again shortly. Might be an option for collection?

I'll give a look into that, the car is located in South East England and a 8 hr drive one way. For me to hire a car and drop it off I'm looking at about £150 (including fuel, excluding fuel for the new car back home). Several vehicle removal companies are quoting around £500-£600 for it to be moved to me on a trailer.

I would happily drive but I don't know the time frames on when I would be able to drive down, with the lockdown differing in England and Scotland.

sounds like an essential journey to me (compared to some we hear about...)

Overnight sleeper to London and then see what works best - if its in the right part of the SE maybe someone could pick you up and deliver you, that's what forums are for!
