I think we need a larger sample size of audio clips - since we've heard conflicting reports - also I'm trying to stay positive

sound is one of the easiest things to change on cars. maybe you can get an exhaust or downpipe

i wouldnt make that a reason not to take delivery of the car since there are many ways to change the sound. the car is still custom and 1 of 1 built the way you exactly wanted it. and dont forget it stills an M340i

Very hard to do on a lease without voiding your warranty...or very expensive. You have to flash a tune, jb4 can't add stuff like that.

no tune needed for an exhaust

also keep in mind warranty is only voided if the part is directly caused by the modded part

i honestly havent heard of any downpipe or exhaust issues on the f or g platforms correct me if i am wrong

either way to each its own whatever works for you haha

Its not the tone or loudness of the exhaust that we're talking about (which can be done with an aftermarket exhaust like you mentioned) - its the pop/burbles that are heard during heavy acceleration upshift/downshifts - I think this is purposely done with tuning so that the air/fuel mixture is altered to achieve those sounds.

yea i hear you..tht i don't know how the pops and burble sounds are created

but i did drive a 2021 m340i and to say the least i definitely was disappointed compared to the previously manufactured M340i

mine is way louder stock then a 2021 no pops or burbles just completely gone for the most part

Hmmm....not really sure what is the obsession with the "340 sound" -- unless you push it above 4k RPM, the car is so isolated, you barely hear the sound (beside annoying "drone" pumped into the cabin artificially while cruising at 70-80mph on the highway).
People complained about the F80 sound, IMO, it sounded 20x better (maybe too loud?) inside the cabin.

I don't see anything special about the stock M340i exhaust sound: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...16&postcount=1

I just got back from a test drive with a 21 model year and it definitely sounds different. Virtually no pops or burbles on downshift and it really disappointed me. I drove a 20 M340i and it was one of the things that sold me on the car. I am not saying it will stop me from purchasing but it has me considering a used M5 more now that they have changed the sound.

I remember my friends and I used to attach playing cards to our bicycle frame by the tire, so that we got 'pops and burbles" as the wheel turned and the cards flapped against the wheel spokes. This was Child Pre-BMW Syndrome. lol

Maybe they really want you to purchase the M Performance exhaust to get these sounds?

I would start calling and complaining. This would be a deal-breaker for me and I'll probably hold onto my 2020 M340i longer because of it. Why pay more for less?

New to the forum here. I picked up a 21 M340 in the beginning of October and I can confirm I don’t have pops or burbles. When driving in sport plus the exhaust seems like it wants to pop but doesn’t. I have almost 2k miles on it so far. I went back to the dealer and asked one of the sales guys and he also confirmed that the 21s don’t have it. Bit frustrating if you ask me, I love pops and burbles as long as it’s not overly obnoxious and somewhat controllable. On my Alfa Romeo, my tune allowed me to control it by letting off the throttle and slightly pressing it again. The M performance exhaust models do pop and bang but that’s to be expected with a performance exist. Anyone running straight pops that shoot flames? 🔥

Took delivery of a 2019/2020 M340i two weeks ago, apparently almost if not the last one out of the Munich factory before mild hybrid switch over. Only got it because someone gave up their individual build slot to me so feeling lucky.

This thing snaps crackles and pops on *all* downshifts, even sometimes in comfort mode. Pops loudly on startup in all modes.

I read somewhere BMW got in trouble for the pops in this and dialed them back, just a rumour though.

fairly certain this is factory tuning and it doesn't help that the factory DME is now locked and you can't simply flash and unlock burbles

Can anyone else that recently picked up a 21 model confirm that the exhaust sounds are toned down?
I'm planned to pick up my 21 model in the coming weeks and getting cold feet if the sound is neutered.

Picked mine up on 8.24

Just over 2k miles in as well. No pops here either.

Wow this sucks... I have been looking at a lease on a 21 model and if the pops and burbles are gone I would NOT be interested ...

Seems to be a mixed bag, much like the MY20 complaints.

A couple hundred miles on my MY21 M340i and I can confirm that there are no pops and bangs or what so ever, no matter which mode you're in. The car is still considered to be loud in sport plus, but all you could hear is the sound of the engine at higher rpm.

If you go to YouTube and watch any review for the 2021 models, you'll notice a significantly less amount of reviewers mentioned the exhaust note, and they tend to only rev it up once or simply not to rev it at all; whereas for the 2020 model, the stock exhaust had almost became the car's biggest selling point and no one could review the M340i without revving the car to hear the pops and crackles.

To me this isn't that big of a deal as I intended to use this as a daily and the 48V mild hybrid system does noticeably improve the overall smoothness of the vehicle which is a pros > cons for me. But still, lacking that sensational aspect is bit disappointing and I feel bad for those who weighed in the exhaust note when they made the purchasing decision. BMW should definitely address this issue when they rolled out the revised MY21 as almost all of us test drove the 2020 model before pulling the trigger.

Been lurking for a while, have an M340i xDrive on order (almost impossible to find in South Africa with the covid-19 supply disruptions and our market being pretty much immaterial).

Does anyone definitively know when Munich switched over to the 48V MHEV models produced in Germany - am hearing conflicting reports it was August but some are saying only from November ?

I believe Mexico switched over some time ago so NA models have the hybrid tech.

My build week was 2020 09 40 (so am guessing very end of September) and VIN starts with WBA as all our models come from Germany/Bremerhaven port of exit.

It seems to be a case of MY21 without 48V and without OPF (no OPF for our market) gets the superlative exhaust note with burbles, while MY21 with the switch over does not but benefits from eBoost and much smoother ASS.

Local dealer seems clueless.
