If I had to guess I'd say one is for America and the other is for the rest of the world. The one with the two stripes has an amber turn signal and for whatever reason (DOT regulations or whatever BMW thinks of) I think that we won't be getting that in America.

This is translated text from bmw.de - details for Adaptive LED headlights:

"The Adaptive LED headlights with cornering light illuminates the road bright and precise and thus ensures more safety in the dark. The headlamp produces a bright and efficient Bi-LED light for the dipped and high beam function in pleasant daylight-like light color.
In addition to the tail light function, the direction indicator as well as the turning and cornering lights are LED technology. By switching the dimmed turn and cornering lights in city traffic better side illumination is achieved, the driver can, for. B. cyclists or pedestrians on the roadside earlier recognize. Between 40 and 70 km / h, the cornering light also acts as a static cornering light.
In addition, the LED daytime running and stand lights in the light tubes create a striking and unmistakable BMW typical appearance. The vehicle also features sculptural three-dimensional full-LED taillights".

The M340i from the LA premiere has the two-stripe rear lights, so that might actually be the US spec.
I'm also curious about the exact reason for this difference, but my guess would be some kind of regulation as well.

More pics: Official BLACK SAPPHIRE G20 / G22 Thread

The M340i cars tested in Portugal also had them, however based on the side-reflectors on the front bumpers these could've also been US spec.

I noticed the tail light differences too. If you look closely, there is only one strip of LED's for the 330i's brake lights, but when you take a look at the M340i's brake lights, it appears that there are 2 LED strips per taillight.

I suppose this is to allow for the fact that M340is will back up faster and need more light?

It's likely not an M340i vs. 330i (or other models), but rather US spec and EU (or all other) spec difference.

This Euro-spec M340i doesn't have the twin stripes.

There are two "stripes" of unlit white backup lamp in one photo....but only one in the other photo. That is the issue for this thread.....really.

It's the brake light, above the red L shaped light on the outer part of the taillight.

My best guess is the lower bar is some optional or regional package that Includes rear fog lamps

So far the extra light strip has only been seen on the US spec M340i, but US cars doesn't get rear fog lights.
So this theory might be better if it were the Euro spec models that had the two stipe taillights.

I believe rear fogs are red, not white (from all the cars I've had with them). Perhaps red LEDs can exist behind a white lens, but that would seem odd. Usually, it's a brighter second setting for the taillamps.

LEDs do not need the lense for coloring but as noted above rear fogs are not typically a US option and it would seem those are US cars.

I just looked at some photos for the 320d which is only coming to the EU market and that only had the single strip in the lights.

I think I read in the m340i xdrive testing reviews that they were US spec cars.

Still can’t work out why the difference.

My theory is that the US spec cars will have 2 strips because it will also be used as a turn signal. I really hope BMW doesn't do this but I have a feeling that the brake light and turn signal will be the same as I believe the new X3 and X4 (X5 too?) are like.
