Yeah, don't get too hung up on "the best." At this level, they'll do a good job and have the potential to move you beyond "smart phone." Going into the $500 range gives you something good enough that you can get out of the Automatic mode and control you shooting situation. If you don't end up doing that, then you haven't wasted a big wad of money.

My experience with friends and acquaintances is that they either get the bug or not. It's usually crystal clear.

Damn, I LITERALLY just sold my Sony RX-100 on Amazon because I don't use it anymore. But I recommend it highly if you need an awesome point-and-shoot. The thing is so technically advanced it should fill 95% of your walking around needs.

So you'd say its worth its 500 price tag? I understand its an older model, as its been surpassed with three more iterations. Is it still a better buy despite its age and lack of "modern" features?

$500 would be a tough pill, so I would recommend going the used route where you can grab one for around ~$350. At $350 it's worth it (to me).

Can anyone recommend a good place to sell some of my gear?

I'm looking to get rid of my Canon 1d mark III, 24-70L, and 85 1.8. I was planning to use Adorama, unless anyone can recommend a better source.

B&H Photo Video

KEH.com

Ebay - I've had great success buying and selling there but the fees are getting outrageous.

Ed,
Well, I guess I must admit I have a cat problem. Here's three of the four that I have. Mark should be next
Could of had a lens but they trumped that.
Thanks for the great lead on these.

FYI, there's a bug (or maybe it's a feature) in Flickr that strips all EXIF and copyright data from any resized image. Your original size upload retains everything, but any smaller image size downloads do not. Also, at least on free accounts, only the camera model shows on the image preview page in Flickr. No lens or settings info.

I'll check that out. Can you see the full EXIF on my images Mark. I've got a "Pro" account.

I can only see your camera body. No lens, exposure, aperture, iso settings whatsoever.

EDIT: Actually, I can't see it on your Heron photo, but I CAN see it on your other photos

This issue is only on pics posted recently. Older posts retain EXIF.

Damn, that pisses me off. I often use the EXIF to help critique others that ask for help. Why in the world would they do that? You could always hide it, now they're hiding it without asking.

It seems they've corrected it. EXIF is working now, even for pics where it wasn't.

Thankfully it was a glitch. I would really miss the EXIF.

That's a relief! You never know with Flickr. Someone is always predicting the end of Flickr, but I really really enjoy the service, warts and all. Exit data is probably one of the more important aspects of the site that I value.

Sean Setters from The Digital Picture website brought up a good point today. Verizon, a notoriously profit-minded company, just bought Yahoo and hence now owns Flickr. Food for thought.

They didn't buy Yahoo, just certain assets of Yahoo, Flickr included. Elements of Yahoo will continue, but will be renamed.

Two big worries, will Yahoo mail fold into AOL? Certainly not, but you never know.

Will Verizon gut Flickr? I suspect not, or they wouldn't have taken it in the deal. They'll certainly take a run at making something out of it. Yahoo, totally failed at its foray into Stock Imaging Sales. I have a friend with hundreds of images listed with them, after they wooed him away from Getty. He gets occasional deposits in his bank account, but he can't even give a link to the sales site. I can't find one on Flickr. Surely a better job can be done in that regard.

Amazon has "free" unlimited image storage, including Raw files, for its PRIME members. I can't see Flickr cutting it's Pro members in that regard and I suspect that the advertising is paying for the free members, but don't really know if that model is working. Of course, they might try to turn Flickr into another Instagram.

BTW, if you've got a PRIME account, back up your Flickr files. Bulkr will allow to download the jpg, with full EXIF and Tags.

I have the unlimited Amazon Cloud account for $60/yr. Virtually all the RAW files I have kept are uploaded there. I need to start uploading finished images as well.

My Flickr images are all 1024 x 768 or similar size. That size works fine for what I need, which is storage for use on websites, yet it cuts my exposure to image theft as 1024x768 isn't really commercially usable except on someone's website, maybe.

I upload the full resolution jpeg to Flickr, but don't allow anyone to see that size. When I download with Bulkr, I select Full Resolution.

Yeah, they'll still steal that size. The infringements that I've found have almost all be relatively small sizes.
