Initially I wasn't a fan of big BMW grills, but always thought they look better on some models than they do on others. I don't like the X7 grills and the chrome ones on the 7 series, but the black grills on the MSport 7 and the G20 look good. From what I can tell with the G22 leaked pictures I like the grill on M-Sport one, but not sure about the grill of the car on the assembly line. The funny thing is that I saw an E60 on the road a couple of days ago and the first thing that came to mind was how small (and ugly) the kidney grills look. I've started liking the bigger grills on at least some of the newer BMW's and gradually have started disliking the smaller grills on older BMW's. Here's a picture of my previous E60...the grill looks too small to me now. It still doesn't look as out of place on this car since somehow the MSport bumper makes it look OK-ish, but on a non MSport E60 and all E90's the kidney grills are too small and tired looking to me now.

BMW didn't have that problem to solve, so the result is being too busy. And the "iconic kidney grilles" have been morphed into huge bedazzled hearts. Honestly, WTF? |

Just like the supposed inevitably of EVs... Sales results is everything. If the new 4 series doesn't sell they will push ahead a redesign. Nobody is mandated to buy any car. If vehicle manufacturers don't prioritize the will of the marketplace they will suffer the consequences.

Lol. I know.
To me though it's the inside and performance that counts more. 90% of what I'm going to be looking at, feeling, touching, etc is the interior. I want to be able to look back at my car and smile every time I park it, but at the end of the day it's the interior that really counts for me. And if the new interior is anything like the M340i, it'll be a win for me. I like the current 440i just fine, but would prefer the newer interior. And of course, the expectation of 380hp vs 320hp or so. |

A better comparison would be the Ford Edsel. The new BMW grills are Ford Edsel grills but two of them. And we all know how long the Edsel lasted.
In the short run BMW might replace enthusiasts lost to the competition because of the butt ugly Edsel grills but in the long run, those customers won't likely stay with BMW and BMW will have lost most of the enthusiasts forever. I like the suggestion made by one of the posters here that BMW should offer alternative front ends. The MSport front end is significantly different from the other front ends so BMW could conceivably do this. It would be interesting to see how many actually choose the Edsel grills if offered a choice. |
