I've been on BMW forums since the mid 90's and a BMWCCA member for 30+ years. I remember people writing letters to the Roundel and writing posts on the forums throwing tantrums about things on the new models they didn't like, including the kidney grills of the E36 vs. the E30 and the E90 vs. the E46.....then some time later many of the same people would start liking the same grills that they were complaining about and would start buying the new BMW's with said hideous grills (or whatever else they were complaining about). It's always something...before my time it was the square tail lights vs. round tail lights on the 2002, etc. All I know.....having seen this sort of thing MANY times in the last few decades most of the people that are complaining about the grill/lights/etc. on the G22 WILL like it and buy it after some time has passed. The rest that don't end up liking it...lucky for you there are other cars that would match your tastes better...enjoy your time with other brands.

After the G22 has been reveled in official pictures, and we've all seen it in person we can make a better judgement on whether the new kidney design and other elements of the car look good or not. Maybe it won't look good....maybe the M-Sport would look good but the standard version won't, etc. It's premature to judge right now, but if past experience is any indication many people will like it right from the beginning, and most of the others within a year or so. BMW could have played it safe with a more conventional design, but they decided to be bold. Sometimes that's exactly what's needed.

Ah yes! Another guy who probably remembers Roadfly and the other forums where people complained, and who remembers the columns in Roundel. Good times!

Initially I wasn't a fan of big BMW grills, but always thought they look better on some models than they do on others. I don't like the X7 grills and the chrome ones on the 7 series, but the black grills on the MSport 7 and the G20 look good. From what I can tell with the G22 leaked pictures I like the grill on M-Sport one, but not sure about the grill of the car on the assembly line. The funny thing is that I saw an E60 on the road a couple of days ago and the first thing that came to mind was how small (and ugly) the kidney grills look. I've started liking the bigger grills on at least some of the newer BMW's and gradually have started disliking the smaller grills on older BMW's. Here's a picture of my previous E60...the grill looks too small to me now. It still doesn't look as out of place on this car since somehow the MSport bumper makes it look OK-ish, but on a non MSport E60 and all E90's the kidney grills are too small and tired looking to me now.

Sorry BMW but when I am ready to replace my loaded 2018 530e, it won't be a BMW if they look like this.
Aren't we simply seeing something similar with BMW, to what Audi went through a few years back when they went to their 'singleframe' grille layouts?

I know at the time, many had a similar problem with Audi "doing such a thing" and spoiling their perceived image. Many on here see the Audi as acceptable, as if it is now good taste. Is it we have simply got used to it? Although it is still debated in some circles, even years after the grille's introduction.

Still photoshopping alternatives.... see this link.

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/y842elj/

I'm sure the BMW grille controversy will, like Audi's, rumble on for years. We won't all like the BMW design language, which ever way it goes. Remember Bangle's polarization of opinion. I personally don't like the huge BMW grilles, but I don't like the Audi or Mercedes approach either.
I don't think it's the same as Audi. Audi's single frame grille fits better. The rest of the nose is very bland, so it added something.

BMW didn't have that problem to solve, so the result is being too busy. And the "iconic kidney grilles" have been morphed into huge bedazzled hearts. Honestly, WTF?

Just like the supposed inevitably of EVs... Sales results is everything. If the new 4 series doesn't sell they will push ahead a redesign. Nobody is mandated to buy any car. If vehicle manufacturers don't prioritize the will of the marketplace they will suffer the consequences.

I kinda like it. It's going to be the norm when all their car lines look like this. If I just didn't lease my X5, I would have leased this.

Lol. I know.

To me though it's the inside and performance that counts more. 90% of what I'm going to be looking at, feeling, touching, etc is the interior.

I want to be able to look back at my car and smile every time I park it, but at the end of the day it's the interior that really counts for me. And if the new interior is anything like the M340i, it'll be a win for me. I like the current 440i just fine, but would prefer the newer interior.

And of course, the expectation of 380hp vs 320hp or so.

In the short run BMW might replace enthusiasts lost to the competition because of the butt ugly Edsel grills but in the long run, those customers won't likely stay with BMW and BMW will have lost most of the enthusiasts forever.

I like the suggestion made by one of the posters here that BMW should offer alternative front ends. The MSport front end is significantly different from the other front ends so BMW could conceivably do this. It would be interesting to see how many actually choose the Edsel grills if offered a choice.
