The e90 330i was a decent car sure. but it also was 7-8" shorter, weighed more than this new g20 an was slower to 60. had horrible 1st gen runflats, and and got what maybe 5mpg less on the EPA test and i'm 100% sure you'd rather be hit by another car in the g20 than in an e90 or have your magnsium engine bolts snap off in it too. IT also had the first gen terrible idrive that everyone hated, and the dual humps if you had idrive. Yes it had hydraulic steering and probably felt more analog. But this definitely is progress. 75 more lb feet of torque with better mpg AND a much more comfortable back seat (I sat in many an e90 rear .... my mom had one in fact... and it was not exactly spacious, and i'm only 5'11 and it was not a car you wanted to say drive to sit in the backseat of on a roadtrip). The e90 honestly for me, was the first bad bmw with its runflats and relatively low powered engines compared to the at the time japanese competition offering more (g35/is350). When the e90 came out I don't think anyone was exactly celebrating it because it felt like a huge drop off from the e46 330i. I really think this could be the generation that BMW gets it again and I am already eying a 330i msport with the diff, or a m340i. Maybe I'm not on the same page with others, but if I can get the same weight car with more space.. well i'm buying a sedan for practicality and space is nice. I don't consider it bloated if the new G20 only weighs 3400 or less pounds. Its weight efficient. |

I just don't know why the car needs to continue to get bigger and bigger - obviously the tech, MPGs, and reduced pollution are good, but the driving dynamics have fallen off in recent years (at least in your run of the mill 3er). I've had a few loaner F30s and they've been pretty pathetic...rather large and floaty cars if that makes sense...hopefully the new one is better.

Ah hard to tell on the internet sorry. I do agree with the F30 comment though, I had one and it was definitely floaty. The worst is the non sport pack ones they give out as loaners. |

The 3 series is still the smallest car in its class as well. Much smaller than the A4 and a bit smaller than the C class. If the G20/G80 can go back to having that excellent FEEL that the G80 and F30 lack, then it will be a winner. On paper it sounds like it is going to be a huge improvement with it being 100lbs lighter, the eLSD, higher spring rates, and significantly increased rigidity. It's too bad if they really do end up killing the manual transmission. It's not just the F30s that have lost driving dynamics compared to the E90. The F80 M3, has far worse steering and relies too heavily on mediocre adaptive suspension. It also has the worst exhaust note of any M3. The best thing about the newer cars are increased efficiency and reliability. Two things most BMW buyers don't care too much about. Maybe if the new M3 keeps the manual, this generation might be the best time to get one. |

I would think enthusiasts are a very small part of the bmw buyer base. I do care at least somewhat about the environment, you don't get to spending money on nice things by just wasting money on gas that you dont need to waste. and reliability... well everyone cares about that. if you are buying you don't wanna deal with fixing stuff even under warranty its annoying to get stuff fixed. and if you are leasing well ... better reliability is better residuals |
