BMW Boss Promises a Manual Transmission in the G82 M4

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-sho...smissions-awd/

Quote:
"I think M4 should be the fortress of manual," Klaus Fröhlich, head of the board of development for BMW, told Road & Track.
Quote:
“Honestly, the pure engineering answer is, you’re much faster with paddles and an automatic transmission,” Fröhlich told R&T. “They’re very precise and sporty. Especially on the Nurburgring, you are much better in control when you’re not taking one hand away [to shift]. I think, in the overall portfolio, manuals will disappear. But I think M4 should be the fortress of manual. So the last manual transmission which will die, it should die in an M4, as late as possible. That’s my view.”

...

“I think it should survive in the next generation of M4. The successors [meaning the next M3 and M4] are all in the pipeline. And so my promise is, yes, there will be a manual in the successor to M4.”

Interesting that, with regard to the MT, he specifically talks about the M4 and does not include the M3. It could mean nothing, or it could mean that only the coupe will get the MT. Sure it would be easy to share it between both, but if you look at the marketplace, there are zero MT equipped performance sedans available now (nothing above WRX STi), whereas MT equipped performance coupes still exist in many shapes and sizes.

Agreed- a concerning non-clarification to me also. If they don't address the weird headlight notch --> Bumper crease on the G80 or LCI it won't matter though.

Don't see myself buying a 2 door in the size of a 4 series, and the next sports car will have to be a manual. Maybe it's time to get a first-in-line deposit down for a M2CSL.

No he just means with the life cycle of the M4, the next gen M4 will be the last with a manual because the next gen M3 will cease production before the M4 does, but the M3 will have a manual too. So in literal speak, the next M4 will be the very last BMW to have a Manual Transmission. Still makes me sad though. At least we have Aston Martin and Porsche still committed to manuals. I suspect the price of a used 2020 Aston Vantage with a manual will be the same or less cost than a brand new 2028 BMW M4 with an Auto Transmission.

Ok cool. Found my next car. BMWs kept me for one more cycle then it's off to Porsche I think. Really excited to see how this next gen m4 turns out.

I like the way he put it. If manual dies it should die with BMW. love it. Will def purchase 6MT for G82 as well.

If the next M3/M4 is the last with a manual, it'll definitely be the last M3/M4 that I buy. I'll likely just keep it until it's paid off.

Pretty sad to think my son who is only 3 now will not be able to experience a manual transmission for himself. Part of why I had to get my F80 3 months ago in manual was to show him how its done before its too late.

I have a 3 year old too. He will be getting my 1M (our only car and family car) handed down to him. I'm going to make sure he experiences it...

Hopefully he isn't too busy playing with garbage trucks or watching Blippi then...LOL

Annoying that you are forced to spend a lot more money for a technology that's a lot cheaper.

Good news: the Genesis G70 has a MT!

He doesn't say the next gen M4 will be the last m4 with a manual. He says :

1) Manual transmission will die.
2) Manual transmission should die in an M4 as late as possible.
3) Manual transmission will exist in the next generation M4.

Now you could be right though, but he didn't outright say that, nor do I think that's what he meant. The only promise he made was that the transmission will at least, at a minimum survive through the next gen M4.

I don't think Porsche is any more committed to manuals than BMW for their sports car offerings. We can already see the transition away from manuals in the 992. I would anticipate that we'll see manuals completely killed off by BMW and Porsche likely around the same time.

Aston I think you're right based on what they are saying, but not sure how they'll actually accomplish that.

Either way, sad times are ahead.

Too late for "what" exactly?

Does he know how to use a typewriter, rotary phone, or VCR or was it "too late" for those as well?

So sad that the tenth of a second you might finish quicker over rides the driving experience. Not good for the car enthusiast world in my opinion!!!

If BMW makes a manual M4 but not a manual M3 I will burn every BMW building in the universe down from the inside out.

Metaphorically.
