BMW Drive Recorder - has anyone optioned this?

Has anyone optioned the BMW Drive Recorder?
I’m interested in finding out how this affects battery performance, especially when parked.

As I understand it, the Drive Recorder records video from front, rear and side cameras up to 20 seconds before and after an “incident” occurs.
This means that the cameras must be active all the time.
Therefore, if your car is left parked for an extended period time, does the Drive Recorder run the battery down? If so, by how much?

I used to run my Backvue dashcams with a Magic Pro whichdrew power from the car battery but, if my car was in the garage for a few days, the battery would be discharged enough that the ASS would not work until the car had been driven for an extended period and the battery became fully charged again.
I have since got around this problem by fitting a Cellink battery which bypasses the car’s battery and allows the cameras to work in parked mode for up to 24 hours.

I’ve looked on YouTube and have talked to my local dealer, but have not yet received an answer to my question.

It wasn't available when I ordered and took delivery in May this year. I wonder if it can be retro-fitted? But reading on the forum, it seems to be quite buggy. May need a software upgrade - but certainly a more integrated solution than aftermarket dash cam.

I have it on mine (in the U.K.). It has been a bit buggy requiring system resets to get it to work sometimes. There is (according to my local BMW genius) a fix coming out next month to sort the issue.

There is a discussion topic on this in the forum. https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1652465

As for effect on battery. I haven’t noticed any issues but was driving most days. My car is now parked up for just over 3 weeks. I’ll let you know if it is ok when I get back to it.

That’s brilliant.....I’ll be very interested to see how you go after a three week lay up.

My car will not be built until Jan 2020, so I’m hoping the bugs will have been ironed out by the time I receive the car.

Ok. Back home after 25 days. Car started first press of the button. Just for info thou (I had thought this but wanted to confirm) the Drive Recorder is not available when the car is not running. With engine off it says “drive recorder not available”

For those of us in Australia, the Drive Recorder will be available for purchase through the BMW iDrive Store portal in the near future but only for cars built from 7/2019 onward. I'm not sure the reason why it's not available for earlier built cars - perhaps they've changed the hardware?

I'm hoping it's just a software related thing as not all earlier built cars have been updated to firmwares that are post 7/2019.

That’s interesting that you received the message “drive recorder not available“.
My dealer told me that the Drive Recorder works while parked, but doesn’t put a significant drain on the battery.
I was also told that you can shut down the Drive Recorder manually if you know you are going to be parked in your garage for a long period of time.
It took a long time to get feedback from my dealer, so it appears that there is limited info from BMW on the actual operation of DR.
The bottom line is that I shall go ahead and get the DR for my build in Jan, to record any potential side impacts, but I will also install front and rear BlackVue cameras with a Cellink battery for those “near misses” we see on the road that the DR will not record.
This is probably overkill on my part, but what the hell!

Lol. $375 on eBay. $495 on bmw website. It's a super easy install. Not sure why someone should pay $1200 to it.

I looked into it. The specs were quite inferior for what you have to pay for it. Better products out there such as Blackvues.

Drive recorder (at least this initial version) has no parking mode. So no impact on battery while parked. Only works while driving.

For my M340i in NZ, I can buy the drive recorder off the ConnectedDrive store for NZ$19 for a month or $89 for a year. There isn't any need to specify it when you order the car. I think I'll buy it for a month just to see how it performs.

I will be getting BlackVue with a Cellink battery (to cover parking modem, as the camera specs are better than the CarEye 2.0.

My 330i G20 is 6/2019 and I was able to purchase it via the iDrive store. Works fine and had no issues. However it does not have a park mode nor is the app accessible via the phone app. Not sure about the value.

Hi Guys, many thanks for all the feedback.
It seems that my dealer did not have full information on the products they are selling. Disappointing.
For me, the only benefit the Drive Recorder has over a conventional dash cam is the ability to record possible side impacts on your vehicle. For this reason, I shall be getting the Drive Recorder, so I can record the registration plate in the case of a hit a run, but my main camera system will be a dual dash cam system (BlackVue DR900S).

My G20 340i didnt have it when delivered, but shows it as available on the Connected drive store. Its $19 for 1 month, $89 for a year, S219 for 3 years and $489 lifetime (in NZ$)
I might try it for a month but the description of it is a bit suspect. Says that if it detects and accident it will record said prang and the few preceding seconds.
And that you can manually record 40 seconds of you surroundings at other times...Not sure if that's a continuous 40 seconds that is then overwriiten.
Not a lot if use really..you would think it would be able to write to the cars Hard Disk up to a specified data size limit or time duration much longer than 40 seconds..

You can set the recording time up to 20 seconds preceding an incident and 20 seconds after. This also is the same time for manually starting the recording via the camera button. You choose how many cameras it records and it stores the recording in the iDrive. Don’t know how many it will store but at max setting it shows 1 out of 10 (so maybe 10 but I haven’t tried to see how many)
You can review stored recordings on the screen or download to a usb device.

There are some uploaded videos on YouTube you can view to see how it performs.

Anyone know the price of it if purchased through the Australian ConnectedDrive store?

I was a little foolish in speccing the option on my incoming M340i from the factory - which I don't recommend due to the LCT & stamp duty added onto the price.

I have a April 2019 build and can confirm that I have purchased Drive Recorder throught the ConnectedDrive store and it works fine.

However, it did not appear as an option to me until I was updated to 11/2019.40 this week.

Nice. I've booked mine in next week for a software update so let's hope I'll be able to load the recorder through the App Store. Mine is a Mar 19 build.
