330E Engine Lottery

Has anyone worked out the B48B20A or B48B20B logic? Definitive rule?
Is it saloon vs touring? RWD vs xDrive? Stock car vs custom options build? Trim level? LHD vs RHD? Etc.

Someone said in another thread that xDrive vehicles have the A motor. However, it hasn't been officially confirmed.

They put the B engine in the M-Sport variety.

I have a B engine and no M-sport package so it really doesn't seem to be a pattern
Perhaps they just grabbed what they had nearby...

So I need to clear the air - what's the difference? I have a B46D 330i as most if not all in the USA do, but why the prodding into the engine code? Is there really a difference between engines with different alpha characters? Besides the obvious numeric B46/B48 SULEV differences..

Yes

If you are in the US and have a non hybrid 330 you have the B engine

The distinction between A and B are as follows

The A engine is used exclusively in 20i and 30e models, the B engine is used in both 20i,30i and 30e models. The engine differ in many of their components which affect how much you can push them with stock parts (the most obvious and major difference is the A engine utilizes higher compression pistons which limit the boost you can make)

When the B engine when utilized in the 20i application it's detuned in purely software compared to the 30i application

I am considering buying a 30e and want to know if there are any differences, and also, if there are any ways to accurately tell if I have the B or the A variant.
Is bimmercat 100% accurately if I go and check the short engine code? I also have access to TecDoc Catalogue as I own a car parts store, would it be more accurate?

Any 330e from 2022+ is 100% sure going to have the "A" engine. The engine code will be in the engine bay, a little lower and to the left after you remove the beauty cover, not hard to find.

Bimmercat is probably not accurate since AFAIK they stopped updating some time ago when BMW starting to ask for money for that information.

Outside the US, that is possibly true. The 2023 330e I took delivery of in January has the B engine (US 46 version). The 320i isn't sold in the US so it's likely easier to consolidate to the single 46B engine for all US cars.

Note the 46 can be both the A or B (it was C or D for the 46 or the other way around? Don’t remember), what is the exact code on your engine bay?

I just saw that BMW USA list the 330e compression ratio as 10.2 (which is really the only difference because of the piston heads) so it looks like you lucky bastards are getting the B.

Same; 2023 330e. Nobody has mentioned the country of origin--it wouldn't surprise me if Mexican production only has the B variant available.

From this year it seems all G20s are coming from Mexico, even European ones, so we’ll see what happens.
